  • I’ll leave my properties empty should Labour form a government.
    Somebody else said that if tentants have the right to buy at discounted rates, but what you are leaving out is the huge council tax you have to pay on empty property!!!!!!

    most landlords and property owners in general want to sell before the rush, but this is what makes the rush out of property even worse

    I strongly disagree.
    Most ordinary residential property owners buy for long term family reasons and won’t be interested in speculating.
    A further group or elderly and disabled have personalised their properties for their physical abilities and certainly won’t be looking to speculate.
    Landlords are a different matter but some will hold for a variety of reasons e.g. CGT

    Of course it doesn't need everyone to take action to move the market.

    I was speaking of residential owners who live in their properties.
    Those who own outright or with high levels of equity won’t be too bothered about paper prices as it’s generally a home for their family long term.
    Of course there will be tiny numbers buying or selling, but the majority will be simple living in their homes.

    Do you know many landlords?
    Those that I know will simply amend their business plans if and when circumstances change.
    Most of them have made plenty of money and are pretty happy overall with the success they’ve had.
    A labour government remains a low probability (but I’m happy to discuss).
    More stagnation is much more likely.

    But isn't that a bit like saying, that you wouldn't be happy with lions eating your genitals? I assume that would be your normal reaction, but it is just as unlikely as the Labour party winning the election AND implementing this (in the way that you presented it).

  • Meaningless, nobody knows what the policy is.


    If it is a discount for long term renters, then landlords will start doing short term lets.


    From what I've read it sounds like they will give a discount to tenants if the property needs money spending on it, ie it only affects properties where landlords have let the house become run down to an extent.


    But I will wait for the official policy to be announced before commenting with any great amount of certainty.

    I agree, every landlord who sells a 2 bed to a couple leaves 3+ renters looking for somewhere else to live. Net effect is to tighten the housing supply.
