Another SORN question
Sorry for another SORN question. I see that there was a thread last week, but don't want to hijack that, and my situation is slightly different.
I'm buying a used van that is going to be converted to a small motorhome. The vehicle has been sourced by the company doing the conversion. I have given them the money for it already, and it will be registered in my name when they purchase it (imminently).
They are arranging delivery from the dealer they are getting it from, and it will be delivered on a low loader or under trade plates. It will be kept off road on their premises until it is converted, which will be several months, so I want to SORN it immediately on purchase.
(I know that I will need to get the vehicle description changed once it has been converted, but that's a separate issue!)
The motorhome company say that they will send off the V5C to register it in my name. Then when I get the V5C back in a few weeks, I can do the SORN online.
I'm worried about what happens in the meantime. I understand that the SORN can't be backdated, so will I be liable for the tax from the purchase date until I get the V5C back?
The van's tax expired in August, so it has been untaxed while at the dealership that was selling it.
The best approach would seem to be to send a V890 form with the V5C, but I don't have the V5C. It's not feasible to go and get it from the motorhome company, as we live about 200 miles away.
I'm thinking that I could get them to post it to me and then I'd send the two off together.
Or am I worrying unnecessarily about getting fined, and should just do what the motorhome company say and wait till I get the V5C back?

Ask the motorhome company to SORN it online using the reference number on the log book or new keepers slip?0

Thanks. I can ask them again, but they've previously said I have to do it. They're not a motor dealer as such, and only do conversions on vehicles owned by the customer. They don't own any of the vehicles themselves.0 -

Well get them to tell you the numbers then then you do it online; you don't physically need the V5C unless you are posting it off.0 -

If I wanted to tax it, then I could do it online with the code.
But as the post last week said, you can't SORN online unless the vehicle is actually registered in your name. You have to do it by post.
What I could do, I suppose, is tax it and then SORN it later, when I get the V5C, but that will cost me a couple of months tax0 -
1. Have the new keeper supplement.
2. Complete this V62 form https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-a-vehicle-registration-certificate
3. Complete this V890 form https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/v890-statutory-off-road-notification-sorn
4. Send off the new keeper supplement, V62 and V890 all together.
P..S. Do NOT get/use the number from the current logbook (the company sends off), you need the number from the new keeper supplement.0 -
You know doing all of this online would be much faster and you only need the numbers from the V5C.0

Thanks, but as previously mentioned, and was on the similar post last week, you can't SORN online unless the vehicle is already registered in your name. It's still registered in the name of the previous owner. If I wait till I get the V5C back from the DVLA, I can then do it online, but there's a grey area about liability for tax in the intervening weeks - the DVLA may or may not charge/fine me.
Thanks to Marvel1 as well, for the "belt and braces" approach, which is more in line with my way of thinking.
I've spoken with the motorhome company again, and they will send me the V5C so I can send it off to the DVLA with my details, as the new keeper, together with the V890 SORN form.0 -
May I ask a SORN question unrelated to the OP's post?
Part-ex'd my old car recently, was told that they would MOT it (it had about eight weeks left), before sending it off for auction.
Checked on the org.uk website - shows untaxed, and no new MOT - about two weeks left on the old one.
Maybe waiting for parts from a 'scrappy', or it has been scrapped - BER.
Q: anyway (apart from ringing them) of finding out, anyway of finding if it is SORN?I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -

Click on "I don't have the V11 reminder, just the registration certificate or new keeper supplement"
Click the button for "New keeper (using V5C/2 new keeper supplement document reference number)"
Put the V5C/2 doc ref in the box and the reg in the other box.
Job jobbed.
In that other thread, it turned out the person claiming otherwise didn't have a V5C/2.0 -
With the V5C/2 new keeper slip docref, yes, you can.

Ok, thanks. I'll look at that.0
