If I wait till I get the V5C back from the DVLA, I can then do it online, but there's a grey area about liability for tax in the intervening weeks - the DVLA may or may not charge/fine me.
They wont.
You have two weeks grace for the V5C to turn up in your name, then they suggest you call them to ask where it is and given it's alrady in your name they will allow you to do SORN over the phone.
I have this in writing from the DVLA after querying it.

Thank you. That's really helpful. I was hoping to find someone who had experienced the same issue. I feel much more comfortable about it now!
