If it's less than 250 g (1/2 lb) then it's a toy, to be fair.

    ". . .. weighing between 250g and 25kg. . ."

    Incorrect; it's 250g to 20kg.

    Horse bolted.

Most of those who already have one won't know about this.....

And, "so what"... laws already exist that are ignored, not worth pursuing, dropped by the police, low priority.

As for £9/year, I'd have at least made it £100 for a 10 year license, it'll cost more to run the license system than it gathers.

That's the sort of level (and then again!) that the CAA were proposing
It was going to be around £20 per year
But HMG mindful that the large model aircraft flying lobby which have been ensnared by the rules on drones are hopping mad and who would go nuts if the sum was set too high
So they told the CAA to reduce it to a sum where it is more likely they will get a large number of registrations as its only a few quid rather than they get a near total ignoring or it if it was set much higher

The usual response is that those who have no intention of obeying it will ignore it so its pointless but that argument applies to any law including speeding for example.
  • It looks like model aircraft flyers are covered as part of their membership of the BMFA, although there is still the £9 fee. https://bmfa.org/

Add this to the other unenforceable laws

No smoking with children in the car

    All dogs must be microchipped.

No electric scooters or balance boards on public roads and pavements

    Etc

It's more important to get them registered than to collect large amounts.
If you price people out they just won't register.
Yes, there will be those who won't register, but, they are likely to be those who don't obey any laws and think that it doesn't apply to them. But, you can't not legislate because of the idiots, otherwise we would still allow drink driving, non insured vehicles and speeding etc.

  • More people killed / injured by bicycles - but no registration for them
  • IF it weighs 250grams or more.

Until the new EASA rules come in 2020 ...
When 250g lower limit is likely to go if it has a camera

Rather odd how anyone can take a photo in public areas with a normal camera, but it become an issue when its on a quad
