The current memory is showing as 3GB. So do i need 2x2gb memory cards to bring it up to 4gb total? What would currently be fitted 2x1.5gb?? I supposed if i opened it up i would see!

    You have currently 1 x 2GB + 1 x 1GB PC2-5300

    For £4 you can upgrade to 2 x 2GB PC2-6400

It's an idea to use it to try out other OS before you settle on one, since it isn't your main device. But I wouldn't bother with vanilla Linux, as it won't offer you anything over what you have with Windows 10. So a bit of a waste of time.

Chromium OS with Android support would likely be more interesting; https://fydeos.com/download

Thanks for your reply. Just a back up laptop for web browsing mainly. I had thought of Linux alright but i have never used it before. My regular machine has W10
    Maybe i could try it,
As you are staring with a blank canvas wouldn't hurt to give it a try first. xubuntu is a good one to start with.

I've never tried that one, but as you say, from the reviews looks like it might be a good one to start with.

So I downloaded Linux Mint 19.2 and created a bootable usb.
Thing i noticed using Linux on the Dell were,
I was not able to find wireless network or any wireless setting, so connected to internet using cable.

When trying to key the @ symbol i got " and vice versa.
Linux Mint has Firefox browser installed.

You have installed/selected a US keyboard layout as opposed to UK. I'll leave it to those who recommended you to install Linux to guide you through the Wireless card Driver installation.

As I stated earlier, IMO a bit pointless to install vanilla Linux if you don't have a particular reason for doing so.
