Apart from vegans who you don't seem to mind upsetting anyway.

OK, we're going forward...... your implying that a vegan would be 'upset' that an omnivore was masquerading smoke salmon as carrot by using the word style.

Let's inch this a bit further forward..... would an omnivore have a right to be upset if a vegan did exactly the same but in reverse i.e masqueraded carrot as smoked salmon by using the word vegan?

Maybe like, oh I don't know ....... this!

The only person that cares is you.

Have you spent the last couple of days finding some vegan 'salmon' that offends you.

So, for the 3rd? time would a vegan style carrot salad made with salmon be acceptable?

To whom ? Is this a real situation or just a made-up scenario ?

I can't see why any seller would want to advertise a salmon salad (or any other food) as 'vegan style' if it isn't actually vegan.

The term is likely to put any non-vegans off and and vegans that might initially have a look are almost certainly going to be checking out the ingredients in detail anyway and would then reject it.

If it's got the word 'vegan' on it, it won't contain any actual meat, fish, or dairy. This is commonly understood, so nobody should be getting 'upset' about it. It sounds like you've been accidentally consuming vegan products because you saw the words 'cheese', 'meat' on the packaging but overlooked the 'vegan' bit - is that right? Normally the word 'vegan' is quite prominent on such products, so it shouldn't be a problem.

There's no such thing as a 'vegan style carrot salad' so producing one that contains salmon would be confusing to all, but yes most of all vegans, some of whom might be upset because they wouldn't expect fish in a product that has the word vegan on it, even if it says 'vegan-style'.

So, to summarise: If it says 'vegan' on it, it shouldn't contain any actual meat, fish or dairy, even if there are other words on it that mention such things. That's really the only thing you need to remember.
  • By that logic cheese can’t be called vegan cheese because cheese is classed as being made from dairy products
I would also say that the terms sausage and burger are also commonly understood to indicate meat in the ingredients.
So it’s ok for vegans to use carnivore descriptors but not for carnivores to use vegan descriptors.
I think this is what bugs people (including me) is the lack of consistency

I'm afraid you've made the fundamental error of attempting to apply common sense to this thread.
  • Yesterday having just run a fast 10k in the cold and wet I was “shamed” when declining nut water in my coffee.

What does that even mean? If it means what I think I'd have told them to "F' off".

(If it's sarcasm, you need to try harder.)
