Tax/Sorn Question
My boy bought a car on the 20/10/2019 and he's been waiting for the log book so he can sorn the car but the seller never sent the log book off for over a week and now DVLA is showing the car as not taxed since the 20/10/2019 so will he have to pay as he still haven't had the log book.

He's got the V5C/2 New Keeper slip, right?
Use the docref on that to tax or SORN it.

And now they have been - which is why the tax has been cancelled, effective of the date of sale. So he can.0

He has the V5C/2 but he couldn't sorn the car until dvla was notified of change of keeper.
That isn't correct I'm afraid. If the vehicle isn't registered in your name then you can sorn it, you just need to make the application by post.
Did your son have it delivered on a transporter truck or is it still at the sellers property? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

So will he be charged from the 20th even though the seller didn't send the log book off until a week later.
How do you know the seller didn't send it away until a week later? Has the seller actually told your son that? Or is it just an assumption because of when the DVLA changed the keeper details?
I mean its besides the point, it was your sons responsibility as keeper to furnish the DVLA with his details. But given its not even 2 weeks from when he purchased the vehicle, I'd say the timescale indicates the seller didn't wait over a week to send it in. Assuming they did so via post anyway. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

That isn't correct I'm afraid. I've just been through all this by post, phone, and email and it is only the registered keeper that can make a SORN declaration. My V5C2 wouldn't work online to SORN my car. I applied by post to SORN it and that didn't work either. I had to wait 5 weeks for a new V5C before I could SORN it. In my case though the car was shown as taxed throughout by the previous keeper so not as bad a situation as the OP finds themselves in.
The whole system needs an overhaul its too complicated and bureaucratic and you can easily find yourself in a place where you can't comply with the law and risk a fine.0 -

You can use this form.
Its the only way to do it if the vehicle isn't in your name. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
