question for the forum - is it irrational to say you can't go for 3 christmas meals with the same work collegues? I think not. But don't appreciate being sniggered at because i said i couldn't afford it. It takes a lot of strength to say no in such a situation.

Lemontree, I have given up on nights out with work completely! I think 3 Christmas meals is completely excessive. I dont say that its money. I just say that I dont want to go! I dont participate in 'Secret Santa' either. I think they call me Scrooge behind my back, but I dont care. Sorting out my money is far more important than what work colleagues think of me.

Lemon, one is bad enough!! Just tell them you have other plans (which you do, be on MSE with us) I have a whole host of christmas parties coming up and we have to go, and yes I should be happy I get to go to glam parties but I just hate having to buy a new outfit for each one (because it gets noticed if I don't... honestly). I used to love it, now I like being home.

Lemontree, I don't think you are being irrational at all - how horrid of them to snigger. There's a very appropriate quote that I can't remember all of but it's something like 'people that matter don't mind, and people that mind don't matter'!

nice quote snaggles. I don't mind doing secret santa it's 'only' £5 and i'm good at getting bargains.
At least it's not a set menu - i can be so picky to be honest, at least this way i do get to chose the cheapest meal.
Definately not doing one of them, and looks like i may not be going to the one in january, looks possible the majority are chosing a restaurant that i won't go to, (defiately won't pay money for food i won't eat/don't like). Just don't appreciate being ridiculed for being skint - and by someone who's in financial difficulties themselves but doesn't seem to want to take radical steps to sort it out.

    Lemontree,

At work I'm friends with clicky groups in various departments and I appear to be invited to all their christmas parties. At first, I tried to attend them all (not only was it prohibitively expensive, but I didn't see Wayne from November until Christmas - well it felt like it). Nowadays, I'll meet a few people for hot and cold chocolate and a chat - admittedly most days in December but still a lot cheaper than untold night's out! And I get chance to actually TALK to them - much more personal! I dont give a stuff what others say behind my back cos they don't matter to me!

Snaggles - that quote is so apt about many things!
