Some of the phones above are on a contract for a two or three year period and include an allowance for calls, text and data. Once the end of the contract period is reached you can then revert to a sim only monthly contract.
The Moto G7 Power is mentioned above and this and the cheaper Moto G7 Play are often mentioned on this forum as good value for money phones. You can buy the Play for £129 at Argos or £124 on Amazon.
If you are happy with the way your Asda pay and go sim works your could continue to use this although there are sims with cheaper rates available. One advantage is that you know you get a signal with this where you live, The Asda sim uses the EE network so this could also be an alternative as well as a sim from Virgin Mobile who also use yhe EE network.
From what I understand from the Asda Mobile web page you can top up your pay and go sim with a 30 day bundle of prepaid calls, text and data which could be useful when you go to France. see:
    https://mobile.asda.com/bundles

With the new phone you should use the setting that only allows it to be updated when it is connected to WiFi then unless you want to use the internet to browse away from your home you wont use any data.
It will also be possible to use your phone to receive and send emails which could be useful on your travels but again if you are not connected to the internet it will use data.
Phone companies are no longer to charge extra for using a mobile in the EU so no problem in France however Asda will charge you 87p a min in Australia.
Many people install the whatsapp app to make calls and send text over wifi for free so this could be an option for Australia if you can get a wifi connection. (the recipient must also have whatsapp)
The alternative is to buy a sim in Australia and use that there.

    Good luck.

    Hi Crawford,
Thank you very much for your reply. It is really helpful and has answered many questions for me.
I have just ordered a new sim card from Asda and I am going to have a look at the phone you mention.
    Thanks again

If you have a new sim coming from Asda it will fit your old style phone but for a new generation phone you will need to push out the small "nano" sim that fits in the middle.

The one with CPW is £140 for the phone when you take out ID mobile.
That particular ID mobile contract is 1 month contract. You can cancel it anytime.
It may not be the best deal in terms of contract.
But it would be a good idea if you need popping to CPW shop and ask for some help. And you can check how much data are using within the first month, then decide what SIMO you require.

I personally do not recommend moto G7 play as it is a lower spec phone when compare to the 2 Xiaomi phone I link above.

You cam get a Xiaomi Mi A2. "opened, never used" for £140 (blue) or £130 (gold) and they would be hard to beat at those prices.

My daughter has the Mi A2 in gold. It's a very nice phone.

I recently bought a reconditioned Xperia XA2 from greenboxshop on ebay with a 12 month warranty for £79 (although that price looks like it was a bit of a steal)

I try to make phones last as long as possible, so I also bought a curved screen protector (£2.85) and red case (£0.99) to protect it. I'm using finger print unlocking and touch screen to lock it, rather than using the buttons as my last phone the power button died. I will probably buy a Qi charger adapter to slip inside the case so that I can charge it without plugging it in, to avoid wearing out the usb-c port.

I have a BT SIM £4 a month 500mb data, unlimited minutes and texts.
