Is dial up still available in UK ?
Just wondered - as an emergency method of getting on-line !

I think it may be, with Plusnet, if your ADSL is down.

But it's so easy to find free wifi or borrow a neighbour's wifi now.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

I have found "nippy internet" - but understand that it uses 0844 which costs 15p per minute from Talk Talk and 65p from mobile (despite nippy claiming 1p per minute) - this makes me wonder whether "nippy" is still live
Described as "superfast" - I don't remember speed as being a description of dial up

    Anybody ?

It depends on what emergency situation is, a satellite internet terminal is also a choice if you are facing a really difficult one.

Another awesome thread by the OP ..

    Dial up - jesus ..

If the phone line that provides your BB is down, what would you even dial up on to get your 56kb/s

With the average web page around 3MB (source : speedcurve) , that would take 438 seconds , or 7.3 minutes to load one page

    This is stupid

More than the availability of a dial-up connection, I would be impressed if anyone actually had a 56K modem...

I was only interested in whether dial up was still available - I don't really plan to use it !
I just remember the connecting noise !

du du du da du du du gagaang agang. IIRC.

Unless your mum picked up the phone in which case youd get the conversation.

Its claim of 1p per minute appears to be specifically:

Its Companies House record suggests it's not:

The site has not been updated since the days of WindowsVista

Still have a USR 56K message modem, though it not been used for about 15 years.

We still use USR 56K modems at work for M2M usage though most customers have been migrated to GSM modems now.
