Is dial up still available in UK ?
Just wondered - as an emergency method of getting on-line !

I have found "nippy internet" - but understand that it uses 0844 which costs 15p per minute from Talk Talk and 65p from mobile (despite nippy claiming 1p per minute) - this makes me wonder whether "nippy" is still live
Described as "superfast" - I don't remember speed as being a description of dial up

Anybody ?

Most people would use their mobile as a hotspot to get online if their bb was down.

Yes - if their contracts allow hotspotting

Most allow tethering now, Google suggests only one does not - Lycamobile.

Legacy contracts with Three don't either
essential 4Gb contracts - you pay an extra £5 per day to tether - considering I pay just £8 for the 4Gb this is a rip-off

Its claim of 1p per minute appears to be specifically:
1p/minute at weekends from BT lines

Its Companies House record suggests it's not:

    Thanks - thought as much
I know BT closed down dial up in about 2012
  • Three or O2 (Classic) PAYG phone SIMs are 1p/Mb, not sure if you could do what you need via a smartphone with one of those SIMs. They may even tether, you would need to check... your only requirement with the Three SIM is to make a 3p quick call, send a text, or a brief browse once every 6 months to keep it activated. Not sure about O2, it’s probably the same.

I use a Three PAYG SIM in a remote alarm, cost per year is negligible.

In this day and age I can't imagine why anybody would want dial-up even as a backup. That's what Smartphones, mobile data, hotspots and whatever else are for.

Modern websites are so sophisticated and feature packed that by the time anything useful has loaded on a dial-up connection you'll have had time to make tea, drink the tea, creosote the shed and weed the garden. If your broadband has packed up you may as well just take your phone and/or laptop to the library (or McDonalds or wherever) and jump on the Wifi there.

I was only interested in whether dial up was still available - I don't really plan to use it !
I just remember the connecting noise !

So why are you wasting everybody's time and effort when you could have just gone onto YouTube and found this if you wanted to recall the noises?
