Dishwasher problems

I bought a washing machine and a dishwasher from Currys at the end of August. The dishwasher has not cleaned properly right from the beginning - food debris and stains left on around half the items each wash. I rinse off bits before putting into the machine and soak baked on food of casseroles etc. Fairy platinum tablets used and have tried several different programs. The machines are Bosch series 6 so not just basic models.

An engineer came today and spent several hours faffing about without being able to find what the problem was - I was a bit worried when he asked me for the instruction manual! He fiddled about with the sensor settings and said the programs would take longer and he disabled the rinse aid function in case the rinse aid was causing foaming. Bosch told him to put the hardness function up to maximum and that I should use salt. I live in Cornwall and the water is very soft - salt is never needed down here.

The machine is still not cleaning properly - the engineer didn't know what else to do and I am stuck with a machine that does not clean, can't use one of the functions and that takes a lot longer than it should so I use more water and electricity.

I thought my contract was with Currys but they tell me to deal with Bosch and Bosch don't seem able to fix it. The machine is still under 2 months old and I told Currys about the problem just a week after delivery. I don't quite know what I should do now.

    I've been Money Tipped!
When my John Lewis dishwasher did much the same (as you say, from day 1) the engineer discovered that the heater had never worked. That was why glassware came up clean but anything greasy like buttery knives and baking trays did not.

In your shoes, I would be going in a group of friends and relatives to the store where you bought the machine and making a complaint to the manager, ON THE SHOP FLOOR, ie in public!

I have spoken to Bosch today who were not very interested, just said they would have a word with the engineer. I have a new machine which apparently only works if the rinse aid function is disabled (and even then not very well), has to be run on a really hot program, has to be adjusted to take longer to run a program and stuff still has to be washed/rewashed by hand. Not quite what I thought I had purchased.

I intend going down to my local Currys (I actually bought from Currys online though - not sure if that makes a difference) and showing them some samples of dirty dishes etc.

Had four dishwashers in 40+ years and never had poor cleaning results. I live in an area where the water is moderately hard but have never used dishwasher salt.

I would continually pester Bosch. I know your contract is with Currys but they will only contact Bosch on your behalf. I have a newish Bosch & they are not as good as they used to be but mine is OK.

I used to be a service engineer & must admit that some engineers are better than others! I found that customers that kept pestering the service department would eventually get a better engineer sent &, if that didn't help, would eventually get a replacement machine. Just keep pestering & pestering.

If you'd used salt you'd only have needed 2 dishwashers in 40 years!

Have you tried pestering both Currys and Bosch on all their social media accounts, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram for example - people and companies take notice of posts.

What makes you say that, EssexExile?
  • Does the Bosch 6 not show any obvious error codes or other unusual indicators at all?

I found this guide (which it won't let me link for some reason, homeappliancegeek[dot]com/what-do-the-different-dishwasher-symbols-mean) that explains a number of different errors, so I wonder if there's something not so obvious that is being overlooked on the machine? Granted that guide doesn't have your exact model, but sounds like there's some things to look out for.

Also surprised to hear how soft the water is in Cornwall. I'm in Bristol, and it feels like I have to de-scale my kettle on a monthly basis, the water is that hard!
