They didn't - OP is miffed that bag was put in the hold and sticker placed on protective cover for passport, Protective cover did its job and protected passport but OP wants to blame airline and have reimbursement/compo for strength of adhesive used on baggage tag (which wouldn't have been an issue if removed immediately)

Airline complaint staff will be having a good laugh at this one - move on and claim on your travel insurance if it's that important

    So to clarify.

Did you remove your passport from its cover before handing it over for inspection?

Its a passport cover, much more serious matters around.

I'll tell you what I'll have a whip round for a new passport cover.

That exactly why I was asking for advice but haven’t got much constructive advice on how to deal with it yet. More judgement and advice on how I should have been more proactive on protecting my belongings from staff handling them.

There is no UK registered office to do I cannot take them to the small claims court. I cannot get an address to write to in the UK and only get directed to there website and call centre who refuse to assist me with any useful contact information or complaints policy.

Thanks for your reply, it’s been more helpful than most.

Surely you need to read up on Italian law and fly back to see them in court.

    £70 to replace the cover.
But that isn't the loss you can claim for - you're not entitled to the betterment you'd get from having a shiny new passport cover. Your loss is the difference in value between
    • a used passport cover without the cosmetic damage
    • a used passport cover with the cosmetic damage
I can't see that being worth claiming for, even if you had a good case (tbh, even £70 is hardly worthwhile).

Looking at it another way, a passport cover which can't cope with something as trivial as a sticker being put on it is arguably not fit for purpose. If you had bought it yourself, you might have a claim against the retailer. As it was a present however, that isn't an option for you.

Get a new cover for £1 and move on. Really not worth the time. Cover did its job. Don’t get such an expensive cover if your not able to cope when it does its job

Yep, plenty of cheap fun covers on ebay that'll leave people with a far more positive impression of you than a dull £70 real leather one.

Mine has 'European Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' embossed into the cover; I can't figure out if it's because the kid in Yimu who designed it knocked it out in 15 seconds with no quality checks, or if it's a sly dig at the gammons who have passport holders that make it look like you have an old style blue passport.

Bottom line the airline was just doing their job. We expect stuff to be stuck to our passports, it's petty common.

This is just an example of a fancy cover not fit for the purpose of this airline sticking an expected sticker on it.

Next time you buy a fancy cover make sure it's sticker friendly.
