I don’t understand this - can anyone help?

Options
I bought a new iPhone XR earlier this month and was going to leave EE to switch to a SIM only iD mobile deal, 1GB of data, for £5 a month. When I phoned EE to get the PAC code, they offered me the same amount of data which I had originally been on (2GB) for £6 a month. I originally said no because I knew I didn’t need that amount of data - I’ve only been using up approximately 1GB in any given month. However after a few days of reviewing iD mobile, I got nervous at what I was reading about them so decided to phone EE and ask if the offer still stood.

I had a bit of trouble at first but eventually, without any arguing, got them to agree to the 2GB and the plan which was offered and that was that.

I was therefore shocked to get a message on the 15th October that I had used up 80% of my data which doesn’t refresh until the 24th October. At first glance I thought EE had pulled a fast one as my plan said I only had 1GB of data - however on reading further, it said I had an add-on of 1GB of free data in the UK and when I checked my usage, it said I had 366MB of 2GB LEFT for this month - so that looks all above board - except for the usage. To give you a comparison, usage for the previous 3 months has been:

316MB used of 2GB; 780MB used of 2GB; 281MB used of 2GB (I’ve used 24.4GB in total over the past 2 years). This is because I have chronic fatigue so I’m in the house quite a lot and using wi-fi most of the time.

The only thing I did differently this month was travel up to Inverness (100 miles) and back one Sunday, a couple of days after the new plan kicked in. The mobile data would have been on for 8 hours but I only used the phone for a few texts that whole day - could that have caused the extra usage? (I’ve had the cellular data switched on for the past 2 years and ‘wi-fi assist’ as well but they’re all off now).

I’m just a bit confused because I’ve done stuff like that before with the mobile data on but it’s never caused me to go over my data allowance.

Have you looked at the data usage log on the phone? What does the phone think it used?

I'd ring them and ask when it was used.

My friend has a couple of GBs and was even sending photos over WhatsApp when she was on holiday. The Plusnet guy could tell her when and how much she'd used.

Would I find this in the cellular data setting? I only seem to have stats for the last two years collectively - I can’t find anywhere it’s broken down further?

I think I’ll have to do this - just wanted to be clued up before I did:o Yesterday when browsing on the forum I came across something about extra usage when downloading new apps which of course I would have been doing with having the new phone but that should have been happening over wi-fi so it’s still a bit of a mystery. However I can’t help thinking it must be something to do with the new phone as that’s the only thing which is different this month.

One thing stands out from your OP
I bought a new iPhone XR earlier this month
Likely where the problem lies. You need to go through your phone settings and check what is turned on to use the mobile data. The default settings will probably be doing lots in the background. https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/iphone/save-data-3510292/

I don't know much about iStuff but presume all phone are similar. When setting up don't install the sim card or don't set up the eSIM until you set up wifi and download all your apps. I made this mistake a couple of years ago and used all my mobile data up in half an hour.

I had the same sort of problem once and it was that the wifi stopped working during the night and switched over to my data.
at the time i was a sleep and when i woke and looked at my phone all my Pay&Go money had gone it worked out at over £12 had gone.

I would say make sure your data is switch off until you need to use it
make sure that your apps can only update over Wifi there is a setting to do that some apps take a lot of data.

I aslo ran out of data on my contract phone once and it turned out it was the speed checker i kept checking my data speed when i was out just to see how fast it was in the places i was going and it used 2gb over about a week.

So just a few things that can happen so now i have plenty of data on my contract and never run out.

I have no idea where it is on an iPhone as I don't have one.
