I wish I grew up in the UK where the key to success is your parents right to buy.
What happens if you don't have right to buy option? What advice would you give me to help our children get a good start? Do you think I should encourage what my parents encouraged me to do? Which is get an education. Truth be told, being an Undergrad with early morning classes, papers, exams was a tough 4 years.

In truth, true but cruel. Sadly when we say this, it is 'not politically correct' and we get bans and warnings/reported on here and people react the way you do... defensive.

But in reality people are defensive because it's the truth isn't?

If you want a good start to your children, teach them work pays and not ripping off the taxpayer. Work hard to better yourself and get an even better job and pay.

how is using RTB, while legal, teaching your children about? Take as much as you can get while you can?? from the tax payer?

People become defensive when attacked.
Warnings on here are generally due to personal insults or attacks. RTB threads often become witch hunts often by the same, chip on the shoulder, forum users. I remember a few years ago there was the same group who would always attack RTB threads. They stated they would continue to do this because if it stopped even one sale they thought it was worth it. I don't think this forum should be used as a platform for personal agendas, unfortunately a minority think it's justifiable.


Ignoring a legitimate government offer which will clearly benefit you to appease a few resentful people isn't a very good lesson to teach your children.

Why do you feel it appropriate to make presumptions about the OP's attitudes towards education, based on their asking whether RTB might be possible for their daughter?

While it may not have been a well thought-through idea, it's not a crime to make the best of whatever the law allows in relation to money, tax and property matters; after all, most intelligent, middle-class people do.

MSE gets a very average ranking on Trustpilot, with numerous comments on the sanctimonious attitudes of regulars on the Forums. Posts like yours and Snooks' do nothing to dispel that negative impression a casual observer might form.

Just for the record, like you, I'm against RTB. I grew up in a working class family with somewhat dysfunctional parents, who made bad decisions, always with the best of intentions. They never listened to anyone's advice, like the OP seems to have done here, so all credit to her for that.

Whilst your intentions are admirable, it is not a good idea for all the various reasons stated by others. She'd be better off investing her money elsewhere until a time when she's mature enough to decide what to do with it herself, whether that be buying a property or setting up a business.

As for the morality of it, I also hate right to buy but how many people can honestly say that they would turn down the opportunity to buy a heavily discounted house if offered to them?

This is on me because I started it with my education post. I could be wrong but I think parents who believe education and hard work is key to a good start would encourage their child to use their inheritance to further their education. Not encourage extending their right to buy option to their child.
