Sara, EO is the way to go and they'll put you straight on what you do and don't have to provide the LEA with. LEAs vary in their approach to HEd families but the law is the same for all of them. In advance of a possible 'demand' can I advise that you don't have to have a home visit. Get genned up on the law and some support from others who have been their and worn the t-shirt....out.0

Remember the phrase "ultra vires" or beyond the powers. very handy if you get a stinky LEA.
Ultra vires means using power that is outside the rules, exceeding the authority, therefore illegal. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

I think the home schooling viits are intended to "support" you and so they can be assured your child is receiving "an education" i do dread our visits (athough i shouldnt)and although i know we can just send a written report because we intend to send our son to school we feel its best to maintain regular(yearly) h.e visits......i have to admit tho that now its just me and ds3 we seem to whip thru work quite quickly and to a good quality leaving lots of time for "fun"-what i hadnt really thought would be included in my teachings are things you regularly do ie when youre bedmaking 5 beds 2 pillows each how many slips etc etc, explaining how the iron works, why windows steam up how long to walk to the shops,70p a busride how much will a return ticket be,when is the next bus due etc etc all come under the education umbrella,dh was quite amused tht ds3 aged 7 stands and works out individual costs in tesco and how much of a share he and his 2 sibs "should" get lol-hes positively thriving and "wants" to learn ,quite often he will ask if we can write a monty story(monty is a dog whose adventures we write about)in fact he listens so well in the summer he asked daddy how a car reverses, daddy told him ........yip youve guessed it ....he reversed the car into the garden wall well taught daddy i said lol obviously maing sure i wasnt within reaching distance!! sad tho isnt it i remember my school days as quite a happy and contented time-school aint what it used to be !!!

just read this thread with great interest, i am thinking of home educating my 12 year old son. he is a lovely lad, he is statemented as he has ADHD, will that affect my chances of educating him at home. can't take another day seeing him come home crying, cos he has been bullied yet again, because the other boys seem to think hes teacher's pet, just because he is quiet, and just wants to please by doing as he is told.enjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0

Hi Shazrobo,
Sorry to hear about the troubles that you son is having, being statemented shouldn't be a barrier to home education... look at this website there is advice for removing even a statemented child from school
www.education-otherwise.org
I'm sure they will be able to give you more advice regarding this, and they also have some useful links...
good luck and let me know how you get on

"he is statemented as he has ADHD, will that affect my chances of educating him at home"
No is the short answer. Look at the EO site and the special ed site which will tell you everything, bit tired to say more

as far as i am aware, unless they can prove general neglect, you do not have to submit to inspection. This only as a welfare issue, not an educational one.
You are correct,as there are no"targets",how can they hold you to any standards. i have a friend who HE`s totally autonomously, and has no "work" to offer as proof...the "inspector" is always happy.
despite years of groups campaigning on these issues, there is still widespread confusion...even among LA officers. if in doubt say that you will confer with "education otherwise" or other support group. its a good idea to join one of the organizations as they have access to legal advice.
having said that, there is much more acceptance of HE these days....but you will get the odd daft LA.
My sister in law,ran into one such in buckinghamshire...and she had to put them right on several points of law.
Good luck !!
i think its just to ensure your child is getting some ind of education appropriate to their needs,i mean lets be honest not all parents would commit themselves seriously to education,I have encountered such comments as "ohh lucky u a lie in every morning" and "everyday is like a saturday to you".
Mind you ive never been offered any financial help or support in educating lol maybe that is expecting it to high!! perhaps it differs area to area?dee mum of 3 "before you buy ...think,how many hours have i worked to pay for this?,do i need it? or can i get it r&r in tesco!! hee heee:A
