first action always has to be talking.
maybe a "hi, don't know if you've realised, but these walls are really thin, .....hope we haven't been disturbing you at all..." wait for response.??
They might be scum bags, but they might not......

Hi,
No easy answers I'm afraid, but I sympathise a lot.
There is a current thread about this here with loads of info on it:

I would advise getting the noise pollution team round to monitor the levels plus due to it being unsocialable hours they could be served a public order notice your choice but neither of these options are going to make them any friendlier.0

and if that doesn't work, do your hoovering to music at 7am!0

I really sympathise with you. We had this at our old house...in the end we moved as i couldn't stand the thump thump of their music any longer (we had asked them nicely to turn it down when they were singing 'Hey Jude' really loudly for the 20th time at 2 o'clock in the morning). They never got the hint!0

I would have a quiet word with them first. Okay hoovering and playing music load at that time of night isn't exactly normal. But they may well be a perfectly plausible reason. IE someone spilt something on the carpet and it needed to be cleaned up quickly. They may also not be aware that there's a problem with the sound proofing.0

It is easy to ignore a anonymous note: it is much harder to ignore an individual knocking on your door and politely asking to turn down the music.
Next time it becomes loud, take your partner and - wearing your dressing gown ideally - knock on their door and ask them to turn it down. The dressing gown will ensure you don't look threatening to them, and then they can see you are trying to sleep. Take your mobile phone with you, and walk away immediately if it looks like it could descend into a doorstep argument.
If that doesn't work, or they start to be unreasonable, you'll have to try plan B (which I would recommend involves the police or someone official - if they actually have the power to do something other than issue a toothless ASBO)Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -
Klaxon through the letter box at 4.00 AM should do the trick. Two can play at that game.0

How about trying to get to know them first. Introduce yurself and offer the hand of friendship. If they and you end up on first name terms, after a couple of weeks you could mention about the poor soundproofing.
This might be more effective in the long term than going in with all guns blazing. It can be hellish being in dispute with your next door neighbours. If you annoy them they may up the ante and it's not easy to get rid of them. The law is a bit toothless. It's great to be ALIVE!0 -
