St James's Place - won't get my cash

In the Telegraph yesterday Marianna Hunt mt one of their advisor's to discuss investing and this is what she found:

She was told "We find the best of the best of the world's fund managers to invest your money"
"If they're not good enough they'll be sacked"

Now SJP apparently only offers their own range of funds and she was told "...we usually outperform all of the time over three or more years"

Marianna had checked this beforehand and of the top 10 most popular funds only one had beaten at least three quarters of their rivals. In fact other research shows their funds fail to outperform !

In fact if you had invested £100,000 in the HSBC MSCI World ETF a year ago you would be £2,000 better off than if you had invested in SJP's Global Equity Fund.

Her other finding, and I've found this as well, is the 4.5% initial fee - £4,500 pounds just to get started.

Well I guess the choice is yours.
