As a meter reader for many years I ve seen a few of these digital LCD displays to be faulty including one which was weirdly showing back to front. I would nt be able to see one of these rogue meters increasing the index because only the occupant would notice it if they keep a close record or it was an active smart meter
. A digital LCD display meter is cheaper to make than an analogue display but they are not as reliable IMO as I ve never seen an analogue index develop faults (unless they had a human intervention ).
.They are so unreliable they have a built in test display where they show five 88888 s as a check that they are not missing sections of the LCD display.

So the KWh is actually increasing. Yesterday despite no one being in the house during the day and not using the heating; and using the shower rather than bath for the kids the kWh was 152

    04/10/2019 3.797
    05/10/2019 20.889
    06/10/2019 37.720
    07/10/2019 23.757
    08/10/2019 152.548

    Is this even possible?

Did someone say the speeding up of the reading is due to meter failing?

there is a letter 'b' next to the reading does that have any significance?

In terms of trying to diagnose suspicious meter readings it's probably best to stick to m3 readings as per post #1.

    3 Oct - 4 Oct you used approx 0.3m3
    4 Oct - 5 Oct you used approx 1.9m3

Nothing significantly wrong with that, if heating was used between 4/5th.

Ok, then it might be worth doing hourly reads whilst nothing is on at all.

Hopefully the engineer can at least confirm there is no leak and that you're safe.

If there's no leak and the meter's incrementing with no consumption then it sounds like an ideal candidate for swapping out for testing.

That's what i'm currently doing, Gas is turned off at the mains and no appliances currently being used. I'm not comfortable entirely turning off the boiler so hoping the pilot won't impact it too much

You need to take the actual meter reading each day. Unless the display is faulty, you seem to be getting some sort of 'processed' figure. The true meter reading would not start from close to zero unless the meter has just been installed, nor would it would go backwards from the 6th to the 7th.

Have you read the instruction booklet?

They are the KWH readings that I have calculated for each day on excel

The meter reads M3 are recorded as well as below

    03/10/2019 9:06 AM 13194.356 M3

    04/10/2019 8:07 AM 13194.691 M3

    05/10/2019 7:48 AM 13196.534 M3

    06/10/2019 7:58 AM 13199.862 M3

    07/10/2019 5:46 AM 13201.958 M3

    08/10/2019 6:02 AM 13215.417 M3

Just a thought. You could create a column of cells that calculate/show the amount of m3 (and maybe Kwh) used for each period. Then you and people helping here don't have to do calculations and any wild variances show up easily.
