When I try to open a PDF file on my new Moto G7 Power, I get the message: No app can open this file.

Is there really no PDF reader on the phone?

Google Drive should be installed on your device......maybe it needs activated...have you signed in?

or install a PDF reader from the playstore

Phones do not come with every possible app installed .
Use Google Play for what you need .
  • I have a G7 Plus not Power, although this is probably of no use at all to the o.p., and just opened an email pdf attachment which displayed without any intervention from me.
I also tried similar on a G7 Play - the cheapest version and the same happened.
I would have to assume, maybe incorrectly, that there is a p.d.f. reader installed in the G7.

I'd previously read that PDF'S could be read on a new Android phone, and so was surprised that it wouldn't open a PDF.

I also thought that browsers could read PDF's.
I got Firefox from the Play Store, but the file would still not open.

Is Adobe Acrobat recommended as suitable for Android?

Are you sure it's a PDF? Have you tried opening it on another device?

Delved a bit further and as ballyblack has hinted, it's Google Drive that looks to be facilitating the viewing and downloading of p.d.f. files on my G7.
Possibly you need to either log in to an existing Google account or set one up first? How "new" is the phone?

As post 3 though, there are many p.d.f. reader apps. in the Playstore.
Excellent phone, the G7! They should have used that bigger capacity battery in the G7 and G7 Plus too.

    Yes.

When I look at the Google Play Store, the Adobe Acrobat Reader has the label "In App purchases".
Does this mean that it is not a free app?

In app purchases means you can buy things through the app. Vast majority of apps on the store are free - as a general rule that is the case unless there is a price shown on the screen. Anyway Adobe Reader isn't the be all and end of PDF readers, just search the store.

The basic app will be free, but will have features that require you to purchase the "full" version if you want to use them. I don't use it, as I use Google Drive on my Android phone, but I would imagine the free version will do what you want.

  • It is free. Just now installed it I had to link it to an existing Google account.
Tried a p.d.f. attachment and Adobe Reader opened it.
I must have used it on a previous device because I had to verify the account using a 6 digit number sent to a Gmail address.
