Soft Modding is 100% legal, after all you own the hardware, who's to tell you what software you should run on it. Microsoft can't say you must run XP or Vista (yet). Same with consoles.

yes, that's what i told myself when mine was modded. reading around i'm inclined to agree, and morally i certainly agree, but i think its still a bit of a grey area, especially if you use a softmod that bypasses copy protection (even if you don't use it to bypass copy protection) - it certainly is illegal to do so in the US.

even if that is the case, its a damn stupid law.

also, i doubt that microsoft will be too bothered, as they're probably now more concerned about the day that the 360 is properly modded (aka the day before i buy a 360 :))

to sum up: original xbox - get one!

Not sure I follow the logic there - but perhaps using different methods it might be?

Mine was soft-modded in 2003 and has been running like a champ ever since - if it did go wrong I would just hook up the laptop, FTP in and rearrange a few files essentially.

depends at what stage of the softmod it goes wrong and if you have ftp access

any guides for swapping out the hard drives on xboxes? you have to copy drive keys or something if i recall correctly? a very simple, easy to follow guide would be much appreciated!

i'm surprised this thread is still here, to be honest. modding was on shaky legal ground last time i looked...

depends if your doing it by softmod or chip?

I had a hard modded xbox with Evox for years and foolishly sold it to a mate some time ago. Bought myself another one (hard modded) after seeing this thread. Now have installed installed, via a bootdisk, Xbox media Center and am planning on chucking a bigger HDD ASAP.

did you install via slayers or one of the new installer discs?
if it was slayers then your XBMC will be years out of date.
    update asap

Mine was from xbox-board.de (release 4.0). It took some doing to download but works well. Is there an easy way to check what version you have?

  • My mate installed xbmc onto my xbox for me at his house but now I am home I am trying to network it to my laptop via a router. I did have it working but now when I try to look at the xbox drives it won't let me and also I am getting an ip address conflict warning. That is problem #1

    Problem #2

When I turn on the xbox and get the evox dashboard, I go to launch applications and nothing is there but I know that xbmc is installed as I could see the folders the one time that the networking worked.

Sorry if this is a bit of a ramble and technically incorrect.

Any help at all will be really appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Actually that is wrong... No modding that will bypass copy protection (which soft mod does) is legal. You can install whatever you want on any system or do what you want but you cant reverse engineer or tamper with copy protection.. Thats why modchips were made illegal as well . old PS2 ones because they just bypassed copy protection and the newer ones because they bypass copy protection but also some have to copy the rom as well.
