very simple.very little to go wrong.
problem with softmods is if they go wrong it can be a mare to fix without a chipped machine.
luckily i have a few
Not sure I follow the logic there - but perhaps using different methods it might be?
Mine was soft-modded in 2003 and has been running like a champ ever since - if it did go wrong I would just hook up the laptop, FTP in and rearrange a few files essentially.0 -
This is the reason I want an xbox, so is there anywhere that is doing them cheap as the op looks like the only one who can find the offerI would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Ramada/Days Inn BRG thread.0

I got 250 gig hard drives in both of mine. I should imagine it will take any size IDE. The xbox will only show up 125 gig at first (at least it did on my 2) but you use a utillity on the Autoinstaller disk to partition it properly.0 -

any guides for swapping out the hard drives on xboxes? you have to copy drive keys or something if i recall correctly? a very simple, easy to follow guide would be much appreciated!
i'm surprised this thread is still here, to be honest. modding was on shaky legal ground last time i looked...

Soft Modding is 100% legal, after all you own the hardware, who's to tell you what software you should run on it. Microsoft can't say you must run XP or Vista (yet). Same with consoles.
However breaking copyrights i.e copying games and dvds is obviously highly illegal.
The hard drives can by any size but they must support ata locking (google xbox hdd for a site listing all drives) and if you don't know what your doing i'd not suggest trying a hdd swap as you risk loosing the xbox and hdd if it goes wrong.
I used to softmod xbox’s on ebay for £10 and do hard drive upgrades for £25. (hdd upgrades do take much longer as you have to copy the entire drive from the original to the new drive).
Be prepared to loose your xbox, that way you won't be disappointed if it goes wrong (not that i've ever had a problem), softmodding is less forgiving than installing a chip should it go wrong, but does costs much less.0
