If you intend to mod these you will need to raid ebay for a few items. You will need an original 'Splinter Cell or Goldeneye or some game I can't remember. (MechWarrior3 I think). Not classic versions. You will need a memory card (8 meg ideally). Then you will need a way of connecting the memory card to PC. I used 'Action Replay'. You will need software after you have Softmodded the Xbox (I used Slayers Auto Install found on torrent) .After that all the info you need will be found by googling. Can be a bit of a challenge and if your not technically minded don't bother.
If you haven't been put off by this you will be amazed by what you will get. I have two around the house networked to my Media center. Oh, I would get a remote control for it also.

It is possible to softmod without any of the above, just that it involves connecting the xbox hd up to your computer and a bit of hotswapping (connecting things up with power on). As others have said XBMC is a superb program and an example of what the box is capable of, if only we could get it on 360's :(
    ..........Insert amusing tagline here..........
  • In case it helps - the £30 XBOXs were in Blockbusters Long Eaton, Nottingham (where I bought mine) and also Asda West Bridgeford, Nottingham. Oddly I think the Asda in Long Eaton had them for £99!
  • I got my Xbox for $88 in 2003 - it was a refurbished unit from EB Toys in the US

It's original use was as a media player but these days it's essentially an Arcade console running MameOx.

I used to be be quite proficient at the soft-modding but some of the later editions had issues when you did the soft-mod and the display would become garbled.

I'd buy another one for 30 quid and mod it for use over here though :)
  • Forgot to say that for those of you thinking about trying to soft mod - when you read these guides it all seems pretty straightforward - however - there are often a great deal of assumptions made that you know what they are doing and crucial steps can be missed out.

It took me a week and reading about three separate methods to finally figure out where I was going wrong!

It is a steep learning curve but as long as you know how to FTP and understand basic IP configs then it's not too drastic overall....assuming it all goes to plan which invariably it doesn't :D

No such issues here. I have 4 in the house all softmodded and streaming over network. I gave one to the local orphanage last year when Argos had them for £50.

I used to use the Bert & Ernie exploit in conjunction with the game save for Mech Assault.

Are you using a later method?

Do you have a link to the type of soft mod you performed?

The method I used was fairly complex in all honesty but you could do in in approx 30 mins all in once you got it all figured out.

I recently hacked my Mio C310X Gps unit and did the hack using the internal flash memory - my GF then let the battery run out and I was left with a "locked" unit :(

Fortunately, in my search for the instructions do re-do the hack, I discovered an SD-card based hack which runs when you boot the device and you can keep the factory settings on the internal drive - way easier and more intelligent should you have a problem with the unit :T
  • I found this link to what is probably the method I used back in 2003:

This guide tells you how to install obsolete font hacks. The old Bert and Ernie, FreeX, and other exploits have been put to pasture with the release of UDE, UDE2, and UXE. Remember, this was developed back in 2003, and suffers clock loop problems, can be glitchy, and doesn't work on newer 1.5-1.6 Xbox'es. DO NOT EXPECT SUPPORT THROUGH THE XBOX SCENE FORUMS FOR THESE KINDS OF EXPLOITS
    RiceCake...

This tutorial is for the people out there who have had a MAJORLY hard time getting the "Pheonix - Bert is cheating on Ernie" exploit to work, as I did. This post will be updated regularly as the hacks/exploits improve. I will just section off the following "Tutorials".

It's actually wicked simple, once you have done it, in retrospect. So... here goes:
