Appreciate this is all hypothetical but being prohibited by a regulator is probably the thing that would prevent such charges if nothing else does.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -

I wonder about the possible implication on high street returns as well- those returning goods having used a debit or credit card not getting a full refund, and those who paid cash getting a full refund. Since paypal is a service it is exempt from cancalation/returns if started.
So they could take the fee from whom ever they like.
Though they might have to split the fees out for the customer upon buying and charge over the sale price to do that. Does anyone think that would encourage anyone to use paypal?
I only use it when forced to as a customer as is!0 -
Buyers requesting cancellations seems to be on the increase for me.
Too many buyers thinking Ebay is like Amazon and they can just willy-nilly buy stuff and cancel for free.
I think some of the cheeky gits think if they request a cancellation and you'll just let them keep the item and refund them.0 -

exactly. someone chimed up earlier saying paypal 'process' the transaction why shouldn't they keep the 30p blah blah...
well the seller is also doing some work here, replying to cancel request emails then actually processing the cancel request within ebay so why shouldn't the seller be paid for his part? why is our part in it done for free? my time isn't free. yet apparently doing all that for free helping the buyer out imposes a 30p charge on us0 -

This just happened to me and I am livid. Not only did I have to pay the penalty for someone cancelling, my beef is that ebay 'know' this happens and do not warn people processing refunds.
I have no issue with the 30p fee for receiving money - but if I refund something I should not be penalised and this 30p should be returned.
IMHO it is the responsibility of the website who processes the transaction to warn you that you will pay a fee. ebay did not. I am in the middle of raising a formal complaint to this effect. If they had warned me, I would have agreed with the buyer that I would refund 30p less.
I will now add this to all of my listings as I am not prepared to be out of pocket. This is a policy that paypal need to be forced to change. Martin?0 -
totally with you. i've had a conversation with ebay about this. so if we issue the refund minus 30p then we don't automatically get all our ebay fees back. so then it takes a phone call to ebay to get the fees refunded in full. utter tosh! what a total time waste for helping a buyers stuff up!0

* unless you do a full refund you cannot reclaim your eBay FVFs. So for instance if you sell something for £10 with postage and buyer cancels but you get buyer to agree to accept only £9.70 (and I can't see why a buyer would agree) then you lose £1 in eBay FVFs.
I'm not sure you have thought this out at all, and also having silly terms and conditions in your listings just marks you out to potential buyers as a bit daft.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Are you saying I should condone theft of my money? As the OP said, why should I be penalised because some clicked "buy it now" and did not read the listing. They actually agreed it was their fault for that reason, but I still have to pay for it. I'm sorry, that's just wrong.
In the case of a full refund being given with the goods even being shipped, there is no reason why paypal should not waive the fee.
If this was my fault, I would accept the charge. It wasn't and hence I am unhappy.
I haven't even moaned about the inability to relist for a month without paying the full FVF (£6) instead of the £1 as it was listed under a promotion.0 -

It isn't theft.
It is clearly pointed out in Paypal's T&C that they retain this fee. If you do not agree with the T&C do not use the service.0
