not sure if others are aware of this but if a buyer purchases an item on ebay, realises they have made a mistake and then asks to cancel that transaction before the item has been posted, if we cancel it for them the buyer gets refunded in full as they should. but then checking the paypal transaction page, paypal keep hold of 30p of our original fees! i believe this is the 30p standard amount paypal add on to each transaction. the cancel process all takes place within ebay in the proper way.
so essentially for helping a buyer out we get charged 30p! seems utterly ridiculous.

PayPal still processed that transaction for you, why shouldn't they get paid? In fact they've processed two transactions for you and generously don't charge you extra for the refund.0

Agreed - they processed a transaction, they are a business, can’t expect them to do it for free.0

They have kept the transaction fee (used to be 20p) for some years now.0

It's been like that for as long as I remember (although until last monthwhen the fee structure changed it was 20p ). It could get worse as well, there were plans for PayPal to keep all the fees whenever a payment was refunded, this was going to be rolled out in the US first, but has been delayed.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Wait until they start keeping the whole fee, already on the way in the US.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0

As above, this appears to have been delayed for some time - Ayden managed payments seem to be what ebay is pushing in the US.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I understand they're a business so need to make money, but surely it'd be fairer to deduct the 30p from the 'buyer' which will perhaps help to stop people changing their mind once they've bought something & want to cancel the transaction?
Sellers already lose out if somebody asks to cancel a purchase listed using the £1 ebay fee offer as if you want the item to relist straight away to find a genuine committed buyer, the selling fee amount then increases to the normal ebay rate as the listing loses it's 'offer' status. The only alternate is to hang on to the item & not list until another ebay fee offer is made. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

The paperwork and man hours though getting information from both sides of the transaction (buyer and seller) to ascertain who should pay would cost us all a great deal more than 30p!
It is never as simple as a buyer just cancelling, how would paypal know whether buyer cancelled or seller has cancelled due to not wanting to deal with a buyer, or being out of stock ? What about lost items, buyer claims a refund, who then pays the 30p and how much time should paypal take in asking both parties why the money was being returned? They couldn't just assume buyer was at fault as that would be completely unfair if item was lost, or seller refused to send.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. From a fairness prospective a buyer wouldn't be able to mess about cancelling purchases from privates sellers, but of course it's easy to suffer yourself than risk the buyer being vindictive later on.
Paypal deciding to retain the fixed fee was just a way of increasing their revenue without increasing their main advertised fees.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0
