I've still no idea if I broke the law driving at 30mph. I think it's safe to say the signage is confusing.

You haven't stated why you didn't just follow the signage.

I did. I went at 30mph because the 20mph limit was clearly advisory.

Oh! Do give it a rest, please.

They did follow the signage. They drove at or just below the signed legal limit of 30mph whilst being advised (and not ordered) to drive at a maximum of 20mph.

Here's a question for you Scrapit.
If you took your car for an MOT test and it passed but there was a big long list of advisories for it, would you automatically get every one of them sorted before you drove the car again?

In what way is that relevant to anything? Try harder. However If I choose to ignore speed limits then I don't ponder on it, I'm aware of what I'm doing and acknowledge that I'm actively disregarding them. It will be for a reason with a dynamic assement of the risk and acceptance of the consequences.

Yes, I “got away with it” every single workday for three years.

Why can’t you accept that advisory speed limits are just that, and in the right car, in the right conditions, the actual safe speed can be quite a bit higher?

You can see mud, you can see people stopped, and there are no nuns with baskets of kittens picnicking there.

Were I driving a removal van stacked with China then I’d be taking it very easy indeed, but I was nowhere near the edge of grip, or unable to stop in the distance that I knew to be clear, at any point.

Now, if you want an example of where I’ve decided with hindsight that I should have been a bit slower then the dip five miles down the M11 where I ran into the speed limiter on a C-class would be far better.
Quite simply you can't see the mud. I remeber once the hatos didnt see the winch wire we run accross that road at 10mph. Keep it up and eventually you will run out of talent and grip. Hopefully you don't help anyone else, the m11 where you topped out is a lot different to the long sweeping curve with different cambers, so compare apples with apples.

The OP is concerned, they are getting appropriate responses. Don't like it, don't read it.

How about during school hours liable to a charge of reckless driving if not obeying the 20mph advisory? The rest of the time 30mph will be looked upon favourably.

Around here the signs flash when a 20mph sign is in force the rest of the time the limit is 30mph.

"A person is to be regarded as driving without due care and attention if (and only if) the way he drives falls below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver."

An advisory limit adds nothing to that test.
