Can anyone recommend

Hi,

After having my Acer laptop for over 7yrs I think it's slowing giving up on me so could someone recommend me a decent laptop please.

Budget up to £300 - prefer the cheaper option though. Would rather buy instore than online, but can be convinced otherwise for a trusted online company for a good saving.

Screen size 14" to 16"

No resolution requirements and don't mind whether matte or glossy screen.

Using for browsing, printing documents, word processing. No gaming or watching Netflix etc..

Would like a package where Microsoft office is included in the deal. I would like the complete package rather than a yearly subscription.

Need battery to last 6hrs+

HDMI 1 port

Minimum 3 USB ports

No webcam, not bothered on RAM, HDD, speakers etc..

Not sure what people think of Windows 10. If it's the norm then i'll go with that.

I have a canon wireless printer. Not sure how I go about linking that with new laptop. I think I managed it when I had a new router.

Thanks

  • Full copy of Office in that price not likely , 3 USB ports yes but hubs are cheap, buy in store could be bettered. SSD is a must these days and at least 4GB RAM (8 is better) re Windows 10 you're not going to find anything else unless buying re-furbished/clearance but since W7 has 4 months left, let's not discuss windows 8. Of course I usually use linux but do also have to use Windows, and W10 is probably getting to be a good O/S. Are you up for a refurb ?

What do you mean by giving up on you? Is something failing or is windows just becoming slow, unstable or unreliable?

After 7 years I am surprised windows is still working well at all. A frequent windows re-install fixes many things and gives things a refresh.

If you try this makes sure that you get all the necessary drivers, especially any network drivers.
  • Thanks for comments.

A number of problems with my currrent laptop, screen flickers, fan sounding loudly, problems when windows boots up.

I don’t mind refurbs. Perhaps there’s a windows 10 refurb out there. Ok, i could purchase office at a later date.

Not going to happen at that price. In fact your would be lucky to get a year of subs at that price. Nothing wrong with libre office if you want cheap though.

Again at that price no chance. (even if they say they do, you would not want to use the options they did to get it there).

    HDMI 1 port

Don't see why not, most do, or dvi, which is just a different lead.

    Minimum 3 USB ports

Of what kind? Might get and A and a C. Maybe even one on a cheapie. You should condider a refurb business laptop and an new battery. Or you know a hub, nothing wrong with em unless you are running power heavy things. But at that price I doubt it.

No webcam, not bothered on RAM, HDD, speakers etc..

You are going to have a webcam on pretty much anything these days. Get out your duck tape if the paranoia takes you!

And you should be bothered on the other things.

8GB ram (absolute) minimum. Prefereable a min 240 SSD. And yeah whatever speakers.

Better than any other windows choice. But being windows Expect a fresh new install every 8 months for the best (yes not everyone does, they should).

Me too canon are best. I hope it's a 6 ink one. I just use a usb lead becuase why would I not?

That reminds me of another minimum requirement for sanity! At least 1080P. AT LEAST.
  • Thanks carrot.

So taking your comments onboard and willing to sacrifice battery life, don’t mind webcam, forget office for now, 8GB ram, 240SSD.

Can you point me in the direction of the cheapest option please? I can go a little over £300, and would consider a refurb.

Of course the most obvious caveat is the dented lid. But that might not be a 'deal breaker' for the OP.
