Winter isn't too far away and we will be in the season of cold noses and sneeziness and need far different sustenance than we do in the warmth of summer.
What is your favourite 'warm you up' dish on a cold winters day that is both tasty and economical to make?
I make masses of soup all year round most of it with whatever veg are in 'glut' at the time and I like using pulses and cheap cuts of meat in the colder months to give substantial and filling meals for us to keep us warm from the inside out. I love a good stew and dumplings be it beef, pulse based or straight vegetable and my all time favourite for raw days when your fingers hurt even in gloves is a nice warming Hungarian Goulasch sometimes made with stewing steak and given that long low heat simmer that ensures tenderness, sometimes made with chunked German sausage which works really well and sometimes made with potatoes alone all are yummy. The other thing we like is a steamed onion and sage pudding which is a recipe from a couple of centuries ago found in a reproduction of the original recipe book, it's cheap and easy and delicious and gives a main meal that doesn't actually need meat to make it sustaining.

Boring I know, but a massive curry. Forget the theatre of naan, pickles etc, just a big bowl of half curry & half rice
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
Another fan here for stew & dumplings and curry.
We like a liver, bacon & onion casserole; suet crust pastry atop a meat & potato pie; Yorks puds with onion gravy; rice pudding; steamed sticky syrup pudding with lashings of custard. Actually, there's not a lot we don't like!Be kind to others and to yourself too.0 -
*Sits taking notes*
Thanks for this just what I need for some inspiration, got plenty of food in but need to find some different to us dinners!
Our list would have to include
Sausage toad and a pile of steaming mash and veg
Hairy Bikers Mince and dumplings
Chilli and either rice or homebaked crusty bread
The usual stew
Meatball subs are a hearty lunch on a cold day and make use of leftovers or I tend to make a batch and freeze them so I've always got a few on hand to whip something up.
Taco soup and my current fave is broccoli cheese soup YUM0 -
Ham & beans
Ham hock in the slow cooker with baked beans, other canned beans, canned tomatoes, pearl barley, lots of chopped root veg, stock cube & some water & leave on low all day.
When you get home, pull the ham hock out & strip the meat & dispose of fat & bones.
A French stick to mop up the juices

Bubble and squeak on a Monday after a roast with cold meat and pickles!
Sausage cobbler with green veg.
Hot pot either lamb, beef or black pudding, all equally comforting.
Fruit crumbles, steamed puddings, baked apples with mincemeat, steamed ginger syrup pudding and all with lashings of hot custard.0 -
i like soup, sausage and mash with swede in the mash, stew, chilli, jacket pots with cheese and beans
also crumble and custard or steamed puddings toasties are nice as wellonwards and upwards0 -
I’ve just made a big pot of rice pudding. It’s a proper rib sticker, the way I make it at least! Put some dried fruit in it whilst it was cooking, that counts as one of your five a day right?! Stirred a spoon of jam through a bowl and now I’m warm and full0

WITH A FRIED EGG (shouting intentional)

Beef and barley soup using ox cheeks
Scotch broth with scrag end lamb
Cassoulet
Meat or vegetable/lentil tagine with dried apricots and 'kettle boil' couscous
I've even got a spare inner 'pot' (charity shop find!) for my little 1.5l slow cooker as because I live by myself it means I can cut down on using my dishwasher as I have plenty of plates/dishes/cutlery to use up to get a full load.Attempting £40 grocery only for the month of October.

Sausage toad and a pile of steaming mash and veg
I love a toad in the hole (made with duck eggs for a superior batter) - usually with everything tipped in it. Vegetables, mini roasties, the lot. I've some stinky Toulouse sausages in the freezer just waiting to be unleashed
