Neighbours have put up a 6 foot Fence opposite our house

  • I would casually say that you haven't a problem with the fence but dislike the colour. They may take the hint and colour it grey or green. I personally would prefer it to how it was before although it isn't very well done.
All that clutter used to be money
  • I don't see what the problem is here. It isn't exactly blocking out a nice view!

You've lost "depth" of view, but not lost "a view".

I'd let this one go. At least you don't have to look at their car(s) anymore.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Well, you shouldn't put up a fence that high fronting a public highway without planning permission. The footpath probably counts as a public highway.

A footpath does not count as a public highway. I would say virtually every property near us which has a side boundary to a footpath has 6 foot high fences, both for privacy and security. The 3 foot or 1 metre restriction generally only seems to apply to fences in front gardens.

I also think it could be a land grab, but for £3 you could find out by buying their title plan.

Would I do anything? Maybe. Definitely, if it was public land.

Some people haven't imagined this from the ground floor aspect and it looks as if your house could feel really hemmed-in from there.

Hmmm..... Chain saws in Screwfix are only £50. You could plead insanity.

"I couldn't help it m'lud; it was me claustrophobia wot made me do it!"
  • But it would have felt hemmed in prior to the fence being constructed. Nothing has changed in that respect!
  • Complain to the council if you dont like it. They will then need to decide if the land is their garden and if the fence needs permission. I doubt they will tell the neighbour who complained.

It's down to the local authority to enforce it, but generally they are. A local friend owned a corner plot and threw a 2m fence up along the path. The authority ordered it be removed.

Can't blame them, it made it look like a council estate.

Is the bit they've fenced off actually their property? I would've thought their boundary ends where their wall and garage are and the grass area belongs and is maintained by the council.
That piece of land does not look like it belongs to them (could be wrong) but it just doesn't make sense. their garden has a 2m high brick was around with no side entry onto the piece of grass they've fenced off. It also seems odd that it just cuts straight through the grass and not at the edge of the highway. Looks like they've claimed a piece of land.

    this ^^

It looks like a DIY job; not a straight line, gaps under it, etc

If that is their plot, then why didn't the wall include it in the first place?
Why doesn't the fence start at their back wall?
Why doesn't it go properly level with either the house or the pavement at front?

    OP;
was there anything on that piece of land previously that might have marked a boundary, eg a small fence, a row of bollards?
  • Ooh just seen the 2nd pic... id say that's not even their property. And the front bit does look awful. It would annoy me more that theyre after a bit of land for nothing than looking at the fence.
