  • WOOW so much information, thanks all.
    Would it be better if I leave the A46 near Nottingham and come in on the A42-M42 ?
    Plus what time does the traffic ease in the evening as we can leave later and get there after 7pm if that will help?

    Leaving after 7pm would probably be a good idea as the rush hour has normally settled down by then....but again, accidents are always the unknown until the day of travel, so google before you leave!

    Possibly. It depends on the traffic on the day. Going that way you still hit the M6 or M42 around Birmingham so that part is no different.

    On Friday we will be coming down the M69, then M6 and need to go to Halesowen, should we head north or south way round?

    The lesser of the two evils is perhaps to go south clockwise around the M42 to Lydiate ash then across the A491 towards Hagley then the A456 towards Bham, if you go anti clockwise you have the congestion on the M6, the M5 (including the 30MPH roadworks ) AND Manor Way.

    I'd do whatever Google tells me to do at the time.

    This, was heading to cambridge from London, waze (part of google) was being insistent that I take some crazy detour, basically driving oppisite ways to how I would get onto the m11. It turns out that the northbound m11 had 2 colloisions on friday 4pm. It was gridlocked. Waze took me around the a406, then a10 and then about 15 miles of country road driving to get to my destination.
  • ^ are you saying Waze was good or bad there?

    If he goes A42, M42 there's no need to use the M6.

    Wrong
    It would be A42 => M42 => M6 => M5 => A456

    Going south M42 => M5 north is a lot longer.

  • Ok, thanks again, I usually use my old Garmin but it is not very good at selecting the fastest route. So which site should I look at for up to date info before leaving?
    I have tried the official .gov site about roadworks in the past but it is useless! It didn't even know the A24 was completely closed for planned resurfacing a few years ago!
