How often did you wear them , were they fashion boots.
10 miles a day is hardly usual for fashion boots. Sounds more like boots used for hiking.

Op said they weren't used 10 miles a day
  • They were Caterpillar boots, ones with heels.

I’ve had Caterpillars before, regular flat ones, which lasted well over 10 years, so I was reasonably expecting a year out of these at least.
  • They weren’t explicitly sold as being clearance stock or any indication they were old.

The only suggestion of that was I couldn’t buy them on the Caterpillar website, but when similar Doc Martens have been introduced as new designs, sold out completely on the Docs site within a couple of months, and then you can only get them from other retailers for a few months more until they also sell out, all selling out within six months of introduction, I was expecting the boots to be no more than a year old.
  • Caterpillar work boots are not great for longevity. They are comfortable straight out of the box and require no "wearing in", but they last no time.

I've bought (and had replaced) several versions of Caterpillar boot and I suspect that the lack of durability is the reason Amazon (for example) no longer offer this brand other than from third party sellers..

Not my point, but yes I agree (unless the boots have been exposed to cementitious products which can often lead to a quick break down in the adhesive used to bond the sole and heel to the leather upper).

I think the OP is entitled to a refund from the retailer as not fit for purpose.

They haven’t been exposed to cementitious products. Just rain, briefly, as I forgot to check the weather properly one day.

Cats used to be considered durable. My first ones (bought around 2002) took weeks to break in and half crippled me at the time. But then they lasted, and lasted, and lasted. I was so impressed I bought a different style after a year or so, and wore them both, off and on, until about 2015.

The ones I bought this year are a fashion style, but with my previous experience of Cats, and just plain common sense, I’d expect them to last much longer. I’ve tried emailing the vendor again and will see what they say to that. LBA will be my next step though.

That reputation (and build quality) is unfortunately a thing of the past.

In the past few years I've had several very expensive pairs replaced very quickly. It's no longer a brand I recommend...

Before you do that ... how much were they and how did you pay?
