I was taught by a driving school but my boyfriend at the time let me used his car for practice while he supervised me. He rarely gave me advice but he actually made me give a running commentary on my thoughts as I was driving along the lines of
"there,s a stationery bus ahead so watchfor a signal that it,a going to pull out, or a child suddenly trying to cross the road after he's s got off the bus....." or if I was driving was on a dual carriageway. " I need to get Ito the outer lane in good time aof I,m taking a right exit at the next roundabout but need to check my mirrors first to see it's clear to pull out ...."

All these commentaries out loud must have been very tedious for him but they reinforced the techniques I,d learnt with the driving school and just saying everything out loud did help to quickly reinforce things in my brain. I passed my test first time.
It's a technique often used on advanced driving courses.
  • The bolded word is offensive in the UK too.

So, if (and I'm making this clear I am not!) I were to describe you as "cretinous", that would be an offence? Can you please give me an authority for that?

(Being offensive does not = an offence)

I want to know where this cones from!

And let's not forget there's a world of difference between using an epithet to describe a post and the poster. Your original use of "imbecilic" was to describe the posts.

I am not an imbecile or a cretin.
I will cheerfully admit that I have posted imbecilic and cretinous things.

The difference between those two is just one of the things that Simby appears to be misunderstanding in his increasingly desperate attempts to be offended.
  • Have come back to this many days later, do we know yet if the supervising party has correct insurance?
Is the OP aware that the supervising party has to be insured and behaving as if they were the actual driver?

Ooooh hang on, we are not allowed to ask important questions are we? I forget, we are asked to give the benefit of our years of driving experience to a learner, BUT we are not allowed to ask questions to obtain context and material facts.... I see, I think I will pass. Good luck, you will need it with that attitude.

I agree. This is going nowhere.

I am sorry if I have offended you and you think my attempts as desperate I stopped posting a few posts ago as my attempts to explain were going no where and my attempts to explain seem to be upsetting people.

I do believe the imbecile is wrong as it hurts those with Down syndrome and other conditions due to its history of use .

But it was not my intent to create an impression that I was desperately offended, so I am sorry for that.

Manxman in exile..I apologize if I offended you my only intent was to highlight the use of the word as offensive to those with disabilities.

I would like to propose a truce and start afresh?

Your last post was just 20 minutes before I posted that, containing a number of references to prove that the word was somehow inherently the single most offensive thing in the English Language.

Your post referencing a US law was barely over an hour before.

<shrug> Fine by me. I wouldn't presume to speak for anybody else.

    I am sorry Adrian c

You are right it was 20 minutes ago, but I was checking and reading the other posts after mine.. where it had expanded to include other words..that is what I meant .. I apologize if that was not clear.

As I am upsetting you and others I apologize agin.. please can we start again and be friends.. it really was not my intent to upset you.

    Please forgive me
  • Those words were historically used to mean people with mental illnesses/problems and are now frowned upon, words such as imbecile, idiot, spaz, mongol are all offensive, and nowadays are not acceptable and deemed offensive.

  • Anyway, back to the questions in hand, OP are you still around?
