Well, OK, partially true. Visa Electron does still exist. But as far as I'm aware no or at the very least very few UK banks still issue them. Electron is a distinct card scheme from all-authorised Visa Debit cards and has its own acceptance mark, BIN range and logo. It also has different scheme rules.

If you say you don't want contactless, you'll get a Visa Debit card without contactless. You won't get a Visa Electron. Similarly, if you have a basic bank account you may not even get a non-contactless Visa Debit, you may get a contactless all-auth Visa Debit - but for pretty much any bank I can think of, you won't get an Electron.
Er, No.
Well, partially true. Many banks still issue Electron cards. Many banks only issue Electron cards for basic accounts or for debit card holders under the age of 18. (Should have said many in my original reply, rather than implyin all banks).
As an example, Co-operative bank only issue Electron cards on basic accounts and will also issue you with an Electron card if you request non-contactless.
A non-contactless debit card doesn’t work well with basic accounts. The whole point in having a basic account is so the account holder can’t go overdrawn. With an Electron card, you can’t, with a non-contactless Debit card, you can.
Either way, still very much in use and not obsolete.0 -
I highly doubt it that they even care about the card you use. All they care about is the little sign that says ''approved'' on the terminal when you use your card. That means ££££ for them and nothing else :P0

Used my Starling debit card to put a deposit down on a new (used) car today and the salesman said that I won't be able to use this credit card to pay the balance. :rotfl:0

Lots of places still seem surprised at MasterCard Debit Cards being debit cards, despite many banks now issuing them.
Used one in a bureau de change in central London (i.e. prime Monzo and Starling territory) and they wouldn't believe it was a debit card, until I showed them the logo on the card.0 -

Do people actually use their Tesco credit card to get points then pay with a different card?
I gave up asking for card that wasn't contactless, as that just seems to be the norm these days.
Cards rarely get seen at all.
I just use my normal clubcard (even though i have tesco debit card & credit card)
In Tesco I pay by gift card as I get 5% cashback on it.0 -

Hmm that’s odd because I have a Co-op basic account and it’s definitely a Visa Debit and has been for many years. And I have been overdrawn with an Electron card in the past!
I certainly know that Nationwide, Barclays, Halifax, TSB and Co-op, all of whom I currently have or have had in recent years, basic accounts with, all issue Visa Debit. They most certainly are not badged as Electron but may well be online cards- previously known as Electron.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -

Till operators will only see (if anything) a short string that indicates the card type, usually one of: "VISA DEBIT", "VISA CREDIT", "VISA", "MASTERCARD", "MASTERCARD DEBIT", "AMERICAN EXPRESS", "MAESTRO" and the occasional "CONNECT DEBIT" and "BARCLAYCARD VISA" (because Barclays are the only people who seem to have ever given the slightest care about how their debit and credit cards are branded). Upshot is, unless you bank with Barclays, nobody will notice and to be honest nobody really cared before either.
Capital One does as well- it comes up ‘Cap 1 Mastercard’ which is a bit embarrassing as it tends to scream ‘I’ve got a crappy credit score’*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -

Except it's not Electron. Electron cards say "Visa Electron" on them. They are a different card scheme from Visa Debits, which can be set to request authorisations for all transactions (even contactless ones).Either way, still very much in use and not obsolete.
I mean aside from no major UK bank issuing them yeah I guess Visa Electron is going strong.urs sinserly,

The whole point on Visa Electron is that they always require authorisation. This has mostly been superseded by Visa Debit/ debit Mastercards that have x2x coding that does the same function.
Halifax/BOS may still have some legacy Easycash holders on Visa Electron but other than that, they are no longer issued in the UK.
I would imagine that most of the app banks issue x2x cards by default as they tend to only ID check. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
