Have to disagree. Nortons is a great product. It used to be known for slowing down PC's but the last couple of releases are a lot better. I use the 2007 version on 2 machines and hardly know its there.

Norton is not as bad as everyone is saying, although I have had problems wiith it in the past. Price is ok for 3 users too. It's slow but methodical. I haven't used it for 3 years+ now.

But, having said that, I use Avast (free), and have had no problems at all with it and excellent results.

NIS 2007 is OK, not as bad as previous versions although a full system scan does slow things down.

Question

If you had a choice of getting a very good antivirus thats free, plenty of antispyware which is also free and a free firewall against something which doesnt have a good rep and you have to pay for it, what would you go for?

As Norton is sold in shops and so is visible to almost everybody, a lot of people may not be aware of alternatives, so when a price comes up like this then I can understand why people think its a good deal.

Decent free antivirus is AVG or Avast
AVG also offer antispyware
You can also get free firewalls like Sygate - check out http://www.filehippo.com

I must be in the minority. I've never had any problems with Norton, had 2003 on my PC and upgraded to 2008 without any hassle or performance issues. A good product from my point of view.

I am currently using the free mcafee through natwest and to be honest my computer has never been slower! also tried avg and a week later my laptop packed up and had to restart it from factory settings

I previously used norton and had no problem whatsoever (but because of this site decided to try free options) so may go back to it, another option I am considering is windows live one care as I used a free trial of that and it was great!

Did you fully remove the anti-virus packages before installing another one? A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Anyone who says Norton Internet Security is OK either

a) Hasn't tried anything else on the same equipment or
b) Doesn't have a computer more than a year old or
c) Thinks that expensive advertising and a strong brand name counts as a measure of product quality.

For example. I was called out to a customer yesterday. He couldn't install the renewed subscription for Norton Internet Security 2008. This was in spite of long phone calls to their help line.

He is a nice fellow who likes to do things right.

I spent the first 15 minutes trying to get rid of the failed installation ( you have to download a removal tool from an obscure part of Symantec's site ). I then restarted the computer and downloaded the updated Norton 2008. Fast and no problem. ( No Norton installed of course ! )

I then waited for 45 minutes while Norton installed itself. I then waited 15 minutes while it carried out its updates.

I left the computer running painfully slowly but with Norton proudly proclaiming itself to be in order.

This was in a HP P4 computer with enough resources to run acceptably well for the purpose it was being used for - ie surfing the 'net .

Adding Norton ( for £ 39.99 renewal ) makes it unusable in my view and I think the customer will be back next week for Eset NOD 32 or more likely will use the free AVG. Neither of which will affect system performance much.


Thanks to the OP for raising this and maybe fellow MSE's will understand that all that is advertised is not good.

Oh and if its discounted so much - what is the reason - trouble selling it at full price ?

I use Trend internet security 2008 for 3 pc's less resource hungry than NIS and 2008 is better than TIS 2007 version.
