Standing charges are around 25p a day for dual fuel (eg green.energy) which is just over £90 a year, so not near the £200 a year you quote. I find it hard to believe that the total annual cost would be cheaper with a zero standing charge company because the kWhs will just cost significantly more with them.
You and all the people who liked your post are obviously a little poor at maths, there are TWO sets of standing charges, one for gas and one for electricity. At 0.2739 it is £100 per energy per year x 2=£200.
Robin Hood Energy tell me that they are named for their location not for robbing the rich to pay the poor, although they are not for profit, These are their Standing Rates
0.3655 - £133.41
0.38115 - £139.12
= £272.53
Obviously there are some better, the cheapest so far is Igloo, they require Direct Debit, however, OFGEM tell me all suppliers must allow me to pay in cash if I want to.0 -

My poor maths also makes that 25p or £91.25 annually but no doubt you'll tell me where I've gone wrong.0 -

Wrong company...

Sorry about that, as they say in Monty Python "What a silly bunt"
I read Green.Energy as Green Energy,
What you neglected to mention was that the Green.Energy company you are mentioning do not just have one of the lowest standing rates but they have low energy rates TOO.
My usage is far lower than the averages they quote on their site, my spreadsheet shows they are £80 cheaper than Igloo who I found really hostile. Still £50 more than I was on but definitely the cheapest I have found so far.
Now I have to try and twist their arm about Direct Debit, Ofgem said all suppliers have to allow customers to pay by cash, so it will be interesting to test this.
Thanks for providing the name of green.energy, I will now go research them, their Chat on site does not work.

I'll probably get an earful for even suggesting this, but a Basic Bank Account seems to be the answer to your nervousness about Direct Debits. There are no bank charges and you can't go overdrawn. Just pay in the fixed DD amount a few days before each DD is due to be taken, perhaps by a standing order from another account.
If the energy company tries to take more, the DD will bounce but the bank won't charge you a fee. You're always in full control (it's effectively Pay On Receipt Of Bill), so what's not to like?
There's really no need for anyone having to go without heating, you just need to accept that there are some effective workarounds to your objections to standing charges and DDs.
If you qualify for and and can get Winter FuelPayment (£100 - £300), Warm Home Discount (£140) and / or Cold Weather Payments (£25 dollops) they could also make quite a significant improvement to your predicament.
You may also qualify for the Priority Services Register. Every little helps !0
