Can anyone figure out how much my shares are worth?

Hi

I've been left 11,000 shares in a private company.

I don't actually own them as yet because they are still a part of probate.

The executor to the estate say they know the shares value but will not tell us?

This has been going on for four years now, last year I was paid £10000
for the dividend payout. So that's £2500 per year. Based on this as anyone any idea what the share value could be?

Thanks in advance!

I dont think anyone can value from there, given dividends can vary

Don't you even know the name of the company?

Dividends in listed companies are usually no more than a few percent annually, which could suggest a valuation in £100K territory but that's no more than a wet finger in the air....

    Hi,

It's a private company Heron and Brearley based in Isle of Man.

    Thanks

A quick bit of digging around doesn't turn up anything particularly accessible about the finances of the company, although you can get hold of published documents for a small fee at the Isle of Man company registry if you're minded to do so.

However, shares in companies that aren't traded on public stock exchanges only tend to be worth what someone is prepared to pay for them, so it's unlikely that there'd be a recognised market value as such, and a figure would need to be calculated and provided to the executor by the company secretary or accountant, based on what an 11,000 stake represents. I don't know why the executor is unwilling to disclose this though, but it sounds largely academic at this stage anyway until you actually get your hands on them and are in a position to investigate further how you'd actually sell them (if that's what you wanted to do)....

Thank you so much for that. It would be interesting to see the documents.
  • It is slightly strange to me that you received a dividend payment of £10000. Usually dividends are paid yearly, so I would have expected £2500 to have been paid each year, not a one off £10000.

    Has probate been granted?

Why are you receiving the dividends if you don't own the shares?

The estate would have received the dividends annually, but the executor probably sat on them for the 4 years the estate has been in probate.
