Is there any way you can convert him to being a DFW?

He says he needed £5k to clear his debts, but instead of asking you, he went behind your back. He would have known he was committing fraud, but that didn't stop him. Now that has escalated to £15k? He could probably pay that off in 3/4 years if that is all the debt he has - with your help.

Has he been in trouble with the police before? How is/was your relationship with your son?

 Blimey, this is a toughie.

I sympathise hugely with your predicament Bude. :(

I also empathise with your son.

Many of us have been desperate here, and many of us have done things we're not especially proud of. :o

As a rule, I am in favour of people facing up to the consequences of their actions.

I think if someone does a bad thing they should have to face the - very possibly bad - consequences.

Once, when I became aware that my son and his mates had been involved in something dodgy I marched them all down to the police station myself, even though it was by no means clear who was at fault at the time, and could have led to them all getting into trouble.

However, when my drug addicted friend brought her dealer round to my house planning to use "the key under the plant pot" to get in and steal from us to pay for her drugs I didn't involve the police.

I was home off sick, so they didn't actually rob us, and I think I would have, if it had been a case of us having to pay ourselves to replace TVs etc if we didn't get a crime number and claim on the insurance.

And she was SO ashamed afterwards that I thought she was punishing herself enough.

    But I digress...

So what's going to happen now?

Is your son taking full responsibility and paying off the cards?

Or is he going to wreck your credit rating entirely by defaulting and you having to endure the consequences?

What are you going to tell the creditors when they call??? Are you going to be forced to lie to them? And then lie to the authorities as well if the credit companies smell something fishy and involve the police themselves.

Are these credit agreements even legal given that YOU didn't sign them? (although I appreciate you can't really go down that route without getting your son into trouble.)

Could you just tell the CC companies that you have no knowledge of these credit agreements and leave it to them?

Although, I might not be the one to actually shop *my* son in these circumstances, but I'm "old school" and I'd be very uncomfortable lying to the police if there was a criminal investigation.

I guess what it boils down to for me is who should be the one to shoulder the consequences of your son's actions - him or you?

My heart really goes out to you Bude. :(

  • I personally would not be able to go to the police if it were my son - I think we decided to bring them into the world therefore we are responsible and should help them the best we can
    .

OK, you've brought up a child to know right from wrong. They have reached the age where they move out of the family home to live with a partner. When do you stop being responsible for them and they take on that responsibility for themselves?
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
