My husband taught me how to do these things (not washing and ironing!) before he let me loose with a car. He’s older than me and wanted to make sure that I knew this stuff if I was ever on my own. But before I met him, I could wire a plug, change a light fitting, put up a shelf, change a washer under the sink, plumb in a washing machine, etc, etc. I learned from this site how to spot potential head gasket failure, and it’s always been a thing that we’ve checked for when buying a second-hand car. It’s not a “woman” thing....it’s an ignorance thing

Don’t presume to know me and that I’m ignorant....I think you’ll find it IS a woman thing and that the MAJORITY of women don’t know how to do these things!!!

I’ve got no problem with anyone not knowing how to do something. But I do have a problem with people who ask for advice but who then aren’t willing to take it!

Lucky you. We don’t all have the luxury of a husband that wants to show us things and keep us safe!

I take it you’re husband can.....

Use each and every one of the washing machine programmes?
    Cook?
    Clean?
    Wash?
    Iron?
    Shop? Etc etc.

Of course you will say he can!
    It’s only the same thing.

You’re opinion and mine are different and that’s my right!

You're going to say you can and do. I could but don't.

The others you've listed aren't exactly rocket science, simple everyday tasks.

The sexism flowing here is astounding.
Why wouldnt a guy be able to do that list?
I do all of the above, work full time and could strip down and rebuild my car if the need/desire ever crazily came to me.

I also share the road with people who are happy to plonk their cars on the roads in whatever condition.
Tyre checks? checking for bulges/cuts/uneven wear is not just for service schedules/MOTs

Yes I hold my hands up to the sexism...but please don’t try and tell me it doesn’t exist, .

We know, I wasn’t asking about car checks that need to be done. I was asking about head gaskets.

What a load of sexist claptrap.

I am male, and when I am home (which isn't all that often) I clean, cook, wash, iron, shop - the wife hates shopping with a vengeance. My wife can put a kitchen together better than I can. I am not mechanically minded in any shape or form.

I do know how to check oil and fluids and check them before any long journey - which is usually biweekly. Tyres are also checked. I service my car at 75% of the service interval recommended by the manufacturer.

Seriously all you need is an old duster and some marigolds and you can check the oil. The oil is the lifeblood of your car, it will show symptoms in the same way as your blood will when tested. If it is rising or falling, both can be terminal to your engine if not dealt with.

It might be the case that statistically more women than men fail to do these checks. That doesn't mean that's how it should be. Checking your oil really can prevent your engine going bang.
