I’ve asked a dozen people I work with and only three of them agree with you, so it won’t happen.

?? But I asked a dozen people who do their own car checks, proving my point that not everyone can, wants to or does their own car checks.....nothing to do with who agrees with me that I don’t do my own....it’s hardly the same.

That was actually quite funny for you tho, well done. Mind you it’s not the first time one of you’re comments has made me laugh out loud.

Good job I don’t need to take my driving test then isn’t it !

    Yes I’m very happy thanks.
just asked work colleagues and out of the 12 of us in today (2 males and 10 females) only three check said things themselves (2 males & 1 female)

As I thought, not just me then and certainly NOT essential!

We also all have no desire to learn, thanks for the advise tho.

Sorry I misunderstood where you state it's not Essential.

I’m sorry but where did you read that I don’t appreciate how important it is to keep a car road worthy???
It’s very, very important....I said I didn’t do the checks myself....I didn’t say the checks didn’t get done!!!

Again I apologise if you are having the weekly checks done by a mechanic then that's as much as anyone can do , most of us on here are money saving so paying a mechanic weekly is beyond us.
The person who never makes a mistake never learns anything.

My wife doesn't check the oil, tyres, washer fluid or anything similar in her car, ever. She sometimes puts petrol in it if she has no choice and I know she put a new air freshener in it the other day. These things all get done without paying a mechanic. I don't do the washing or ironing in our house and we don't pay a cleaner. I suspect our division of tasks is not unique.

No worries, just to confirm that I was stating it’s NOT essential to know how to do the checks myself as many people do not.
I DID NOT at any point state that it’s not essential to do the checks at all. *** Aylesbury duck*** PLEASE READ.

Also I don’t pay a mechanic to do the checks as I can’t afford that either.
I simply meant that when the mechanic has the car in to fix it, he will check everything for me, probably at no cost to me.

Until recently I had a partner that took care of all of the cars needs, the jobs now been passed onto my uncle that will keep an eye on things for me as I do not know where to start with cars.

A lot of misunderstanding going on and people jumping to conclusions and making presumptions.
so frustrating and upsetting when I came on here just asking for people’s opinion as I know nothing at all about cars and feel torn between the two lots of diagnosis.

I’ve been called stupid, I’ve been pulled up on my spelling...had many sarcastic comments....It’s shocked me to be honest as i know if I could help someone with something I know about but they don’t...ild be happy to share my knowledge, I certainly wouldn’t want to ridicule them for not knowing about something or the things they’ve done wrong.

Thanks so much to everyone that made relevant comments and tried to help, it’s much appreciated.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this....it perfectly showed exactly the point I was trying to get across to people!
And it made me laugh too as that’s just like me, I’ll do anything in the house but when it comes to the car NO....that’s a blue job and I’m only good at the pink jobs LOL.

I'm sorry about your reception in this forum. There are more than a few Arthur Daley types here who at the sight of a lady motorist will jam on their pork pie hats and set about telling her what's what.

They aren't much better with Almera drivers to be honest. The sight of honest value trundling by on 4 part worns, with an occasional light top up with oil from the back of the garage, offends the sensibilities of some. She never got a new filter in 4 years and 40,000 miles and thrived on it.

But you should, you know, check the oil, brake fluid, and coolant regularly. It's a safety thing, for you and others.

Its our opinion you personally should be doing these checks. It's also the opinion of the people letting drivers on the road so it kinda has a bit of weight behind it.

My husband taught me how to do these things (not washing and ironing!) before he let me loose with a car. He’s older than me and wanted to make sure that I knew this stuff if I was ever on my own. But before I met him, I could wire a plug, change a light fitting, put up a shelf, change a washer under the sink, plumb in a washing machine, etc, etc. I learned from this site how to spot potential head gasket failure, and it’s always been a thing that we’ve checked for when buying a second-hand car. It’s not a “woman” thing....it’s an ignorance thing.

I’ve got no problem with anyone not knowing how to do something. But I do have a problem with people who ask for advice but who then aren’t willing to take it!
