The gatherosstate method is really only to ensure windows 10 becomes activated after clean install.......is that correct?
Is it otherwise possible to activate W10 using my exist W7 Product Key?
I checked for the product key using Belarc advisor and the OEM one was shown. Also there is a sticker on bottom of laptop with my product key but difficult to make out as partially wore off!
Also its currently W7 Home Premium installed, does this mean i need to install W10 Home version.
Thanks0 -

We won't be using your key. We will be using the gatherosstate method.
Of course what I wrote was correct. Why would you ask...?0 -
Why not buy another SSD and install WIN 10 on a dual boot retaining WIN 7.
When switching off it will boot up again in same system used last unless alter in the bias, hence i have 2 keyboards just hold DEL down whilst switching on.
I wont be using WIN 10 have GFX installed on WIN 32 and WIN 7 64 dual boot.
Drives me nuts the WIN 10 on a lappy have to use specifcally to run one programme for business.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -

If you really want to run legacy systems, use a virtual installation, such as Virtual Box by Oracle. It's free and even allows the use of 32 bit XP running on a 64 bit Win 10 PC, etc. Within the Virtual Box installation, you can isolate the OS and programs from the internet, so no updates or A/V needed.0 -
Just coming back to this thread to update!
My SSD arrived today, was already prepared with the windows 10 download iso on USB and Genuine ticket created.
Fitted SSD, no problem, installed windows 10 from USB, activated windows using the genuine ticket created earlier, which worked a treat.
The whole process was quite simple in the end, despite me having some concerns in the beginning!
Laptop definitely loads quicker now.
Thanks to everyone who offered support for this project!
One more query though, is the windows 10 anti virus alright by itself or would it be best to use Malwarebytes also? Is the free version of Malwarebytes ok?0 -

You should take a layered approach. Defender is fine on it's own. But then you should also use a Sandbox when you want to try something out for the first time. Also think about your Browser. Get one that blocks 'nasties' by default or one with which you can use Add-ons to block them.
You might want to keep one Browser free, such as Internet Explorer, which you won't likely use anyway, for sites where you want to be tracked, such as Quidco and TopCashBack.0 -

Which would be best browser for blocking 'nasties'?0
