I know that updates for Windows 7 are finishing in January, but does that mean I should change my computer.

I have had my current HP pavilion for circa 10 years and it still works well for what I want to do, plus I really like Windows 7.

I know you were advising another poster about a replacement computer and mentioned SDD, which I have never heard of:o

Will it be dangerous to continue using my existing computer online after January? I do have Kaspersky Internet Security installed on it.

Also, if I did buy a new computer is there any easy way of transferring the data over from my existing one or would it be more sensible to pay a computer person to come and do it for me?

As some of you already know, I am a complete technophobe and just don't really understand anything much about computers:(

As it still works well, keep going with Windows 7 and your anti-virus. Come back if it slows down or you have any other problem.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.
  • Tell everyone which exact model of Pavilion and then someone will give you detailed info in whether it is worth just installing a SSD (not SDD) and maybe more RAM , usually very simple to do even for a novice, and guide you through transferring the data to it.

Thanks for that, so not getting Microsoft updates won't render it useless, which is the impression they seem to give you.

Thank you, but I wouldn't dream of attempting to do anything like that - I am too scared of it:o

Why didn't you update to win10 back in 2017?

I had a very similar query regarding the windows 7 issue. Was thinking of switching to a linux system like ubuntu, download it on usb stick and try it out that way first.
Or else continue using windows 7 and free AVG and Malwarebytes if that would be enough? I'm also using a HP Pavilion laptop, g6 model.
  • not much point using av if you don't keep your os up to date.

some on here have said that you can still update to win10 using win7 product key. i would go down that route if still available

It will not make it useless, but as time goes there will be less support, and updates for your installed software will probably eventually cease.

if you go to a dos prompt and type systeminfo you will get something like

if you do go to 10, you could possibly cancel your a/v subscription and save some cash?:D

The other side is that sometimes that apps are not updated, and may not work on newer os

Why? Do you have an aversion to Windows 10?
