    Hi there!

Sounds like you are getting into the swing of things! Perhaps its not the right time to move yet, but one day it will be and imagine the deposit you will have by then!

    Keep up the great work!

  • Enjoy the cake yogavibes! You are doing really well, I hope your re-mortgaging foes well at the end of December :)

I am the same with food shopping - some people can do amazing things and have such a small bill but we spend approx £70 a week for 2 adults! That does include all breakfast, lunch and dinner but it still seems a lot but I can't seem to reduce it!

    Cheering you on!

Thanks fruitloop - keeping fingers crossed that my survey comes in at a reasonable quote for the HTB still. Your overpayments so far are ace - I need to figure out how to write a signature so I can keep track of what I'm overpaying when we do start. I'm also going to join some challenges once I have the new mortgage.

Thank you! They have been helped by a refer a friend bonus at work and a tax rebate! I find the yearly mortgage challenge really helpful and there is a year year challenge too which I have joined part way through, which I am sure you will be able to too if you wanted too :)

It took me a while to work out how to do a signature :rotfl: if you click on your round picture on the lefthand side (it has a small orange circle to the top right), then go in to settings which is on the top right hand side of the page..and then there will be a list down the left hand side and signature is one of them and you can edit it there. Hope that makes sense! Looking forward to following your journey!

  • Finally received email from surveyor with valuation this morning :j:j:j whilst it was a bit of a shock to see how little the house has been valued at, it actually means the HTH will cost a lot less than I thought to pay back  I reckon about £9000 less than what my worst case scenaro figures were. I think it is done to house prices dropping quite a bit over the past year where we live - there are so many houses like ours not selling and loads more still being build on another huge estate near by. I am going to send the report off to the HTH people and then hopefully they will send confirmation of the amount I need to pay back which will mean I can FINALLY sort out the remortgage. I want it in place for end of Nov as this is when our current fixed term ends.
Still heading towards the end of the month without using the CC :T I discovered £50 that I had squirrelled into a savings account yesterday for something I don't think I am getting billed for. So went off to S'burys and spend £49.62 on food to last through until payday next week. I really struggle when we start to get down to the last few things in the fridge - it reminds me of having no food when I was little and I hate to think that my kids worry about there being no food. I don't know why I worry about this. DS1 and DD have more money than me in their bank accounts and regularly come home from school with supplies from the corner shop.
I thought I had found a new job yesterday - spoke to employer and sounded really good. Then OH calculated the cost of travel was way too much to even consider it  I had no idea train fares could be so expensive. A bit gutted about it :( Feel I'm stuck in my miserable job until this mortgage is paid off. At least OH loves his job so I don't feel too guilty for moaning about mine all the time :rotfl:
Right off to play with mortgage calculator to see how many more shifts I need to work before I can hand my notice in!

  • Playing with a mortgage calculator was a bit depressing - I am basically stuck in my job for many years to come  I need to refocus myself a bit more on things outside of work I think.
Have had a pretty good weekend on the moneysaving front. Still have a little cash in the bank and get some money on Tuesday before payday at the end of the week  Yesterday was a cheap day - yoga, bike riding and visiting family. Only spends were mincepies, wine and crisps. Then today was treated to lunch out by family. Spent £4 on a candle and £1 on some biscuits. I have sent off payment for the HTH admin fee and all the documents. Next step is getting a mortgage balance from current provider and then doing application with our bank for new mortgage.
Sat down with OH and showed him all the figures for the new mortgage. He wants us to look at 10 year fixed deals so I need to do a bit of research on them. Does anyone have one of these and if so any comments on the pros/cons?
Off to cook a dinner then lovely walk with OH and dogs planned this evening

Hi yogavibes :) It sounds like you have a plan and well done for moving forward and getting rid of the HtB. My friends recently got rid of theirs and they said it was such a weight of their minds, though it wasn't plain sailing - everything took longer than expected and they forgot to factor in the interest charged by HtB  So heads up to check all figures include the interest charged! (psst: they can only calculate the interest up to a particular date so give yourself some leeway as the solicitor will ask for an up-to-date redemption figure when the remortgage is ready to go)

I have a five year fix and was tempted to get a 10 year one, I have a plan to save enough to get an offset in 2024 and that's the only reason I didn't choose a 10yr fix.

Is there anything that can be done to improve your current job? You said your work colleagues are nice at least.
Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck :)

  • Thanks Smlsave - the HTB has certainly been a lot more complicated to repay than I realised it would be when I took it out. I think I have to manage my own expectations about my job. It is close to home which is the main priority for me. I need to learn to be better at saying no to taking on more when I am there. I'm due a week off for half term next week :j

  • Enjoying being off work this week. I now have my mortgage redemption figure and just waiting for the HTB figure in the post before applying for new mortgage :j Got paid last week for all the extra shifts I worked last month - treated self to first trip to the hairdressers in a very long time. I have started a budget for Christmas and put aside £350 this month. Will add the same amount next month and am hoping that will near enough cover it. Have put £2850 aside for the CC payment so only £400 left for next month :j:j Am giving serious thought to how I can make job number 1 less awful. Am wondering whether I need to meet with my boss to see if she can help me out.
I have a pretty :money: planned for this week. Went for a walk with kids and dogs in the woods this morning. Tomorrow catching up with a friend for coffee. Weds may do cinema trip with 2 for 1 tickets. Then maybe a bit of baking towards the end of the week. I am going to go through my wardrobe whilst I am off and plan out outfits for various Xmas parties to reduce the likelihood of any impulse shop buys :money: I don't buy many clothes at all - I'm super fussy about what I like and too lazy to try on lots of different things. Plus I've always hated spending a lot of money on a dress that I am only likely to wear twice over Christmas. Plans for this afternoon - cleaning bathrooms and ironing - v money saving!

  • total spends today £3.20 from the c@@p for mince pies and custard to eat whilst watching bake off final later. Had another lovely day off with kids. Cleaned out wardrobe, finished ironing, had big walk with dogs. Going to cook curry for tea - yum. Received paperwork for HTB - calculated new mortgage needs to be - drum roll - £241666 :eek::eek: could be worse I originally thought it would be in the region of £255000 :rotfl: still lots of over payments are going to be needed to get this figure down to something less scary. Starting Jan hope to pay £1000 on top of mortgage in order to get the term down to about 10 years. We possibly will end up getting something smaller once the older kids leave home before the 10 year goal, but I think we need to have an end point in sight to focus our overpayments in the meanwhile. Then if we decide to get something smaller in 5 years at least a big chuck of the house will be ours. Plan for tomorrow:
    - do new mortgage application
    - cancel pet insurance (premium is now over £100 a month )
    - cancel two of our life policies (mortgage still covered by the remaining ones plus have life cover from work pension)
    - make CC payment

  • A mixed week on the money saving front. Cancelled old pet policy and took out new one, paid large chunk off credit card and cancelled a policy no longer needed. Mortgage application process is turning out to be longwinded due to HTB. I couldn't apply online so spent over an hour yesterday trying to sort out. Then today was asked to send a copy of the original agreement for the HTB which I cannot find anywhere. I'm not even sure I have ever had a copy of it. So still haven't got the mortgage application sorted. Back at work next week so will be trying to sort out around work in the evenings - arrhh! it will be worth it when sorted though as will be able to make overpayments online which am v excited about.
