Tradesman has changed payment terms between quote and invoice

Received a quote with payment terms of 28 days from invoice - which was all fine as my payday would be 21 days from when I expected the invoice.
Agreed the quote
Work carried out
Received invoice in which the payment terms have suddenly changed to 5 days from invoice!
I have no intention of paying within 5 days (as my family would have no money for food!)
I assume I am perfectly within my rights to pay at any time up to the 28 days as stated in the agreed quote? I.e. not within the new timeframe which has appeared on the invoice.

If you accepted the quote, and that quote stated payment 28 days from invoice, that is the contact into which both parties entered. If the contractor has a cashflow problem that is his issue, not yours. If you are able to pay earlier than 28 days you could offer that as a compromise.

Should the tradesman have issued a quotation if they were unwilling to abide by the terms given on that quotation?

Anyway, paying for the works wouldn't leave the OP without money for food if they pay on the agreed date.

Payment under the agreed terms would have been fine so that’s not relevant (work essential and would have found alternative tradesman if the terms had not allowed the time for my next pay to come through)

Tesco's pay plenty of there suppliers in 28, 60 or even 120 days.

If the terms are 28 days on the initial quote then that stands..... I have different terms for different customers retail is on delivery but my business customers are all on 28 days from invoice.....


Don't quote 28 days if you haven't the cashflow to do so.

He can't change the terms after you've agreed and he's finished the work. Just let him know that you can't pay before XYZ date, as stipulated on the quote. He shouldn't have said 28 days if he really wanted it within 5.

To be honest if a business hasn't got the means to stand payment for an invoice being late on occasion, then they have bigger problems.

OTOH, with all due respect to the OP, I wouldn't want to be that reliant on my next wages to pay unexpected bills. Life has a way of coming and kicking you when you're down, and while it's not always easy to achieve, some sort of financial buffer is a must IMHO.
