New Build Phone Sockets issue

Hi,
Don't know if anyone can help, moved into a new build with pre-fitted phone sockets, we have a openreach master socket 5C, I have connected the our phone and broadband via a filter which all seems to work fine.

We also have a few extension phone sockets installed which look like they take a RJ11 connection, if i connect my phone line or broadband to these (without filter) I don't get a dial tone. Do I need a filter, would that be the issue? I can't try the filter from the master socket as it's a different connector.

Any advice?

Thanks

If there is no dial tone, then the extension is not connected. Nothing to do with filters. It's very common in new builds for the sockets to be fitted, but not wired up. BT OR would have installed the master socket, but extensions would be down to the developers normally.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • You should still have a dial tone on the other sockets even without a filter.

If you remove the faceplate from the master socket (2 screws), are there wires connected to the bit that comes off? Any extensions should be wired to that bit, so if there are no wires, the other sockets you have aren't connected - unless they've done something strange.

You could also try connecting your router to one of the sockets to see if it connects to the internet - if they are RJ11 (so maybe pre-filtered), they should take the cable to your router.

You could also unscrew the extra sockets and see if there are any wires connected - if so, try to follow them.
  • Thanks, just wondered if I had needed different cable or something
  • Thanks, I did take one plate off and it does seems to be wired up, also tried going direct from router to rj11 (no filter) but nothing..

I guess I will have to contact builder, thanks

You shouldn't need a separate filter on the master socket, it's built in.

Are you sure they're not RJ45 ethernet connections? There may be a bank of maybe 4 similar sockets somewhere near the BT socket, or under the stairs, to put an ethernet hub in.

Take a faceplate off one of these non working sockets and see if they are connected.

I suspect that the extension sockets are either not wired up to the NTE5C faceplate, or if they are, they are wired incorrectly.
I'd mention it to the developers and get them to sort it.
You shouldn't need a separate filter on the master socket, it's built in.

Only if it has a pre filtered Service Specific Front Plate
You can get one for an NTE5C socket, but they don't come with them as default.

That's a good point. Would be a really nice set up if so.
