Would you approach someone you thought was strong, physically aggressive and in a rage? People get stabbed for much less.

Well you would weigh up their body language, it sounds to me the OP has just assumed that the driver is aggressive and that the van door caused the damage. He drives a city car, if a van door was smacked into the side of it, I would potentially expect damage to the glass too.

I was assuming that the 3rd party wouldn't just say 'fair cop, pay the man'. It doesn't seem to work like that very often, well not in out experience with a small fleet of vans. Its NEVER anyone's fault lol.

Well they might if there is CCTV and there are some scenarios that are more clear cut than others e.g. a parked car is rarely at fault :)

My nephew had a case recently where an older lady at a supermarket hit his car. She admitted it and her insurer accepted liability.

I agree isn't always the case but its worth knowing about this route IMO as it’s avoid excess and loss of NCD (with a few caveats).

Well yes of course if it was a little old lady in a wheelchair then you might approach, but if you are under the impression that some hefty lout has kicked your door in then why wouldn’t he kick your head in?

If the OP doesn’t answer we can only speculate but I’m putting that forward as a reason why it’s not automatic that you would approach someone capable, willing, strong and with total disregard in a secure area. For someone to do this (if they did) they were both physically strong and somewhat deranged.

I doubt the driver was present as if they were, they would have sought OP and story would be different.
