Turn everything off and see if the meter is still going round.

Is there a chance there could be a mix up between day and night rates / meters?

How much is the hot water on for?
    Tumble dryer
    Dish washer and so on.

We gave them an opening reading

Did they use this opening reading on your bills? In many cases people find they are paying for the previous occupant's consumption.

natalie - could you post your readings please.

Can you read your meter(s) today please - old and modern meters have plenty of potential to mis-read - old old clock dials that went in different directions and the modern ones that you have to press button 9 and have a decimal point.

  • Hello,

I’ve copied all of the actual readings below:

    Gas
    02/06/2018 - 40091
    12/09/2018 - 40485
    27/02/2019 - 43021
    02/09/2019 - 44639

    Electric
    03/06/2018 - 76948
    12/09/2018 - 78488
    27/02/2019 - 82490
    02/09/2019 - 85918

I note that they’ve also been out to the house twice to take their own readings so they have had more regular readings than I thought.

We did have an issue with the boiler in December and needed to have it running all the time to stop it cutting out so that could be a cause?

Thanks very much for your help

I think it would have been cheaper to get the boiler fixed? Leaving it on has cost you hundreds extra.

I've recently finished living in a single glazed 4 bed cottage (fridge) for a year. 55,000kWhr of gas and 3,500kWhr electric cost £2,500. So I struggle to see how you've got through £4k of energy- other than UW are RIP off merchants. What are your tarrif details?

If we ignore the boiler "mistake", your electricity consumption is high - what's that going on?

    Gas 12/09 - 02/09 is 4154 m3 (I assume metric meter( is 46,500 kwh @ (say) 3p is £1400. Very high

Elec for the same period 7430 @ (say) 16p is £1200 Very high

More typical - gas 10,000 kwh; elec 3,000 kwh.

    1) You've used the energy - and are paying the price for not keeping you eye on the ball

    2) Re Electric - the big uses are heating and water heating (but you use gas),

showers (is your gas or electric) , cooking old freezers/fridges particularly American style.

Read your meter every day for a week and see if you can track this down

PS Adding standing charges and VAT gets you to £3000

We are at home all day, have electric cooking, heating, washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer etc etc and don't use as much as leccy as you do and on top of that you appear to be using silly amounts of gas as well.

You really do need to do an energy audit to find out what's using it all.

What tariff are you one (ie how much are you paying for 1kwh or gas and 1kwh of leccy and what is your standing charge). You could benefit by getting onto a cheaper tariif as well.

It's easy to just keep paying the bill without querying why it's so high (whether its excessive use or excessive cost) is costing you a lot of money and don't forget you've got to earn around £4500 salary to pay a £3000 energy bill so it's really worthwhile doing some investigating.

I think the problem is a £4k one, if you agree with post #4.
  • Thanks all, I’ve been taking daily readings the last couple of days:

    Electric
    4/9 - 85951
    5/9 - 85987
    6/9 - 86004

    Gas
    4/9 - 44647
    5/9 - 44654
    6/9 - 44662

Shower uses gas boiler, we do have American fridge/freezer but it’s obly a year old and supposedly efficient? Dishwasher goes on maybe three times a week. We have a toddler so washing machine and tumble dryer are in at least every other day, sometimes daily.

I’m getting a smart meter fitted on Tuesday so I can keep a closer eye on things.

I guess I’ll need to put it down to a very expensive lesson. I can get cheaper with bulb but guessing I won’t be able to move until paid deficit off

Do as you are doing now - keep reading your own meter - perhaps a diary as well.

Your daily electric consumption is huge - between 4 5/9 you used 36 kwh - what did you do on that day /
