Can E.on force me to have a smart meter?

Options
Hi - I am new to this forum and I wondered if someone could help.

I signed up to the eon v24 tariff and now eon are telling me I agreed to have a smart meter installed. I checked my emails and terms and conditions and it doesn’t say I have to have one - just says they will contact me about installing one. Not the same surely!

So my question is - can they force me to get one? Has anyone got any advice? Their texts and calls are becoming a nuisance.

Many thanks

The T and C s seem pretty clear to me.You agree to have a smart meter installed to obtain their best tariffs. They can t force you to have one yet, that is surely coming soon , but the T and Cs are also plain enough when they say you will be offered a different tariff if you do not abide by your original agreement.
I hope Eon stick to their guns but I expect greedy commercialism will kick in and to avoid losing a new customer they will back down and let you stay on the new smart meter tariff without a working smart meter install although I read that suppliers may install the smart meter minus the comms hub so its just another credit meter

Thank you for your quick reply. May I ask which terms and conditions you are referring to do you have a link? I am quite sure I am doing something wrong here but could not find that in the documentation for the v24 tariff. Thanks again.

    https://www.eonenergy.com/for-your-home/products-and-services/Tariff-terms-and-conditions/eon-fixed-1-year-v24
On Ukpower.co.uk the current Eon tariffs all contain in "plan info " that they are smart meter installation tariffs, that is the Fix Online Exclusive, V7, V 30 and V4 but in the T and Cs of the V24 it only states "we may contact you to offer you a smart meter " .That is not the same so it looks like they can carry on offering you a smart meter until you order them to stop. The V24 is not a smart meter installation tariff.
looking at their high priced tariffs personally I would dump Eon and go with Symbio Energy for electric and Zog Energy for gas .Fixed rates, no exit fees , low standing charges

Do you use a smartphone ? Do you have WiFi at home ? Do you have a microwave in the kitchen ?

Whatever the pros and cons of smart meters, I don't think that particular argument stands up very well.

same as most people......probably capable of submitting own readings once a month and doesn't need a box to tell him/her to turn down/off heating/tv
