pension credit and carers allowance help

can any one give me some advice on this please.
If my daughter claims carers allowance ( because she has to things for me as i am disabled) would it interfere with my pension credit, its only a friend of mine also receives pension credit but when her son claimed carers allowance they deducted £62 from her pension credit so i don't really want my daughter to claim it if they end up doing the same to me.
thank you

it depends on whether you are recieivng the severe disability premium with your pension credit.

    Sorry, pressed reply too quickly.

Have a look at your pension credit award letter and see if you have the severe disability premium as part of your award. This is given if you live alone or are treated as living alone (so who do you live with?)

You cannot have the SDP as part of your pension credit if someone is receiving Carer's Allowance for you. So if someone claims Carer's Allowance for you then you would lose the SDP.

Please tell us what benefits you are receiving (if you don't mind). Do you receive DLA/PIP/AA? For care/mobility?
  • i don't receive severe disability premium but i get the highest rate of attendance allowance as i am a
    disabled pensioner
    thank you

If you live with other adult family members the SDP is irrelevant. However if you live alone you are entitled to the Severe Disability Premium in your Pension Credit (because you get AA). If you are not getting it you can ask to have your Pension Credit recalculated to include it from the date you started to get AA. The SDP is worth £65.85/week. If your daughter claims CA she would get £66.15/week but you would no longer be eligible for the SDP.

Do you live alone? If you do please check your Pension Credit award to see if it includes theSevere Disability Addition.

Note also that your daughter can only claim CA if she is not earning more than £123/week from employment. In any week in which she does earn more than this she is not entitled to CA.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • thanks, I live alone and no i definitely don't receive SDP just the highest rate of attendance allowance, i receive exactly the same as my friend she doesn't get sdp either but she got deducted £62 from her pension credit when her son claimed carers allowance that's why i wanted to find out if the same would happen to me if my daughter claimed carers allowance thanks

Then you should be considering the information in post 5 above.

If money was deducted from your friends pension credit then she was receiving the SDP and when her son claimed carers allowance this stopped it, which is why money was deducted.

As you live alone then as advised, you're entitled to claim the SDP, if your daughter doesn't claim carers allowance.

Your original post implies that you also get Pension Credit. To be clear Severe Disability premium is not a separate benefit. If applicable it is included as part of Pension Credit. If you get Pension Credit you need to check your award to see if the SDP is included.

Pension Credit normally tops your income up to £167.25/week. If your other income is £100 you would get Pension Credit of £67.25/week.

If the SDP is included Pension Credit will top your income up to £233.10/week so if your other income is £100/week you would get Pension Credit of £133.10/week.

The above figures assume you do not have savings over £10,000.

  • thanks , i already asked her this morning she doesn't receive sdp shes wondering now if they have made a mistake and shouldn't have been deducting it from her pension credit and this has been happening to her for over a year when her son first claimed carers , if it is a mistake then i would prefer to stay on what i am already receiving then my daughter makes a claim for carers allowance if its not ment to interfere with pension credit

She won't be receiving SDP now because her son claims carers allowance for looking after her. When he first claimed because £62 per week was deducted then this will have been the SDP.

SDP is not a separate benefit, it's paid in with pension credit.

Have you actually checked a recent award letter to see if it states SDP?
