Quietening trickle vents

Hello,

Is there a way to quieten down the noise that comes through trickle vents? I've moved from somewhere that didn't have them, and so I opened the windows regularly, to somewhere that does, and the noise difference is a bit noticeable.

I don't mind paying for a decent job, I just wouldn't know what to ask for or what the best fix might be. It also wouldn't be all trickle vents in the house, maybe just the living room, possibly 1 bedroom.

I suppose a very crude fix might be to cut down some 1cm noise dampening foam and attach it to the vents, not a permanent addition and it wouldn't damage the vent either, maybe worth a shot?

Appreciate any suggestions, thanks

Are you renting though? I disable the shutters on my rental trickle vents, as my tenants seem to like living in a damp mouldy fug. You'd receive notice if you were my tenant & sealed the vents.

Just try to get used to the noise IIWY. I bet you don't even hear it after a month.

I have my doubts they're any use and I've blocked most of mine several years ago, and the damp mouldy fug hasn't appeared yet. I took the vents off and taped over the holes. It's reversable if it does cause an issue. You'll likely be ok unless jkO is your landlord?
  • Hello, no I'm not renting.

If it's your own property you can either close them or tape over them. Different part of the house, but the level of condensation in our conservatory when I closed the vents was astonishing.

I removed the vents, taped over the hole in the frame and replaced the vents on our house several years ago as we were getting dirt and wind in.
Like you we open the windows regularly and have had no condensation problems.
Noise is greatly reduced by this.

  • How do the vents come off, just glued on? Is it a single piece you pull out, essentially leaving a gap to the outside? Are people packing the hole with soundproof foam before taping up?

    Cheers!

Mine just unscrewed on the inside (screws under white covers) then I stuffed them full of insulation & replaced. The windows have been replaced now though with windows without trickle vents.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Did you find the insulation made a difference?

I'm unsure whether to try insulation, foam, or vinyl.

Did you have any issues with this? As far as I understood if your existing windows have trickle vents and you replace the windows then the replacement should have trickle vents also, according to 'building control' the last time I looked.

I hate trickle vents, never have ours open, never have damp but they do provide free accommodation for spiders. If I ever get around to replacement windows I'd love to specify these 'out'.
