mobile contract for teenager

Hi
Looking to upgrade my 2 teens phones from 'pay as you go' to buying a contract - any pointers as to a good provider plus how to keep tabs on how much they are using?
thanks

I'm sure there are plenty of examples but one possibility could well be Tesco Mobile with their 'Family Perks': https://www.tescomobile.com/perks

They use the o2 network, you can cap the bill, and you could be rewarded each month e.g. 1GB of additional data etc.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

Alternatively just give your kids free access to your bank account and save the potential arguments that will follow with teenagers and a contract. :)

At least (unlike many parents) they are asking before the nasty bill arrives....

    I would against it.

The deal from voxi or Smarty is good enough that I don't see the point of new contract unless you buy a super expensive phone.

But there are a lot decent phones under 300 between which I don't see the point of contract.

Do you mean “sim only” ? Yes that is better than PAYG.

Don’t be too cheap though. As calls out of Allowance are expensive.

Look at plusnet. Virgin. Both on EE network and 4G

Around £10 month for calls txt data

Plusnet more flexible. But charge for short txt codes

Grab their phones weekly to check usage
  • Three are currently doing a sim only deal 8Gb unlimited calls and texts £9.00 pm.

I'm with Sky, and they let me set a maximum monthly expenditure - not sure if other operators do the same. I currently pay £3 a month for unlimited calls/texts and 1GB data.

I have 4 teenagers all with a contract phone. All the phones are in my name so that I can log on and check their usage and bills at any time but so far had no surprises.

The cheapest are the two Virgin Mobile contracts but they wouldn't let be have any more than 2 contracts so I've also got ones with EE and Vodafone that work out more expensive.

All those providers have spending caps that you can enable on the account to limit usage above the bundle.

For comparison, all 4 got an iPhone SE 2 years contract, per month - Virgin cost £26, EE £36 Vodafone £38 - that was 2 years ago and all now due an upgrade for Christmas. Probably got the Virgin deal so cheap because I also take their broadband / tv pacakges as well.

The Virgin one is different because you pay for the handset as a separate loan to the SIM contract which means once 2 years is up I only pay £8 a month for unlimited calls / text 12 GB of data.
  • 4 of us have virgin sim only contracts which I pay for. £6.18 each a month with plenty minutes, texts and 2gb data each. Unlimited calls to each other. £5 cap on each number so no nasty surprises. Very MSE i think.
  • Get them pay as you go with monthly bundles, so no chance of any unexpected costs
